Republicans and Democrats are different. We have different beliefs, different priorities, and certainly different perspectives. Many times, we grow up in different parts of the country with different communities and backgrounds. "Different" is not always a bad thing. Of course, we all want to see the country succeed, but how we go about achieving success is our constant battle. When it comes to the next generation of voters, these differences have currently taken center stage.
In a new NBC Decision Desk Poll, we get a serious look into what Gen Z voters care about and how they’re looking to prioritize their lives. The poll is broken down into four sections: male and female voters for President Trump, along with male and female voters for former Vice President Kamala Harris.
The poll asked each individual category a simple question: “Which of the following is important to your personal definition of success?” The poll then gave 13 options to choose from, and asked respondents to pick three of those options. For example: owning your own home, being married, having no debt, having children, fulfillment in your work, retirement, and spiritual priorities. The fascinating part is just how far apart some of the Trump/Harris voter sections became, which I believe sends a clear message regarding the future of the country. Let’s look at the numbers.
When asked this question, male voters for Trump’s number one definition of success was having children. Compare that to women who voted for Harris, who put that priority at number 12. “Having a job or career you find fulfilling” was the personal definition of success for women who voted for Harris.
Take a look at the overall numbers from NBC:
The separation here is staggering. Conservative men for Trump see having children as their definition of success, while women for Harris put their career first, and children way down the list. This speaks to a major difference within our parties. Conservative men and women prioritize family and children over careers, while liberal men and women choose work and career over family. This is exactly the trend we’re seeing across the country. Liberal families have fewer children and also have them later in life, as they’re working to set up their careers, while conservative men and women put their careers on hold in order to raise a family.

Society has certainly changed over the years, and one clear example of that is the rise of safe spaces and a focus on mental health. While I support mental healthcare for those who need it, the idea has taken over the Democrat party. Safe spaces on university campuses have been created to shelter students from existing in the real world, and harm student development from working with people they disagree with—which is half the country. Out of the 13 questions women who voted for Harris were allowed to choose from, the third highest response is “having emotional stability.” For men who voted for Trump, that choice fell to number 10. Thirty years ago, “having emotional stability” would not have even been a question in this poll to begin with. It speaks to the level to which we have coddled students and those entering the workforce. Male voters for Harris put that same question at number four on their respective list, while women for Trump put it at number 10.

We all want to have work and careers that are fulfilling. No one wants to go through life feeling trapped in a job—I completely understand that. The question becomes, where does your satisfaction come from? For many conservatives, it comes from family, faith, and work. For many liberals, it comes from work, financial freedom, and mental stability. This poll is giving us a clear depiction of two worlds. One focused on building wealth and success for themselves, with the other building family legacy and a future for others.
The one good response from all sides in this poll? “Fame and importance” came in at number 13 for all respondents. That’s one thing we can celebrate.
