NextImg:New: Manhunt Ends With Capture of Suspected Shooter of 4 in Anaconda, MT Bar

Anaconda, Montana, law enforcement officials have announced the capture of the man suspected of shooting and killing four in a local bar just over a week ago. Michael P. Brown led officials on a manhunt in and around the small, southwestern MT community nestled at the base of the Anaconda Mountain Range, as my colleague Susie Moore wrote on Aug. 1:

There's a horrible story out of Montana Friday, as authorities say a gunman shot and killed four people at a bar in Anaconda before fleeing.

Four people are dead after a shooting at a bar in Anaconda, Montana, Friday morning, the Montana Division of Criminal Investigation said in a news release.

Anaconda-Deer Lodge County Law Enforcement Center said in a Facebook post they are searching for suspect Michael Paul Brown, who is believed to be armed and dangerous. The agency advised the public to stay out of the area and to not approach him. Chase Scheuer, a spokesperson for the Montana Department of Justice also identified Brown as the suspect to CNN. The Montana Division of Criminal Investigation, or DCI, is part of the state’s Department of Justice.

The shooting took place at 10:30 a.m. local time at The Owl Bar, and the scene is secure, the Montana DCI said. Additional details about what led up to the shooting were not immediately available.

Here's more on the suspected shooter:

Authorities said Brown was last seen driving a 2007 white Ford F-150 pickup with Montana plates DTY493. The vehicle was spotted heading west of Anaconda on Stumptown Road.

Brown is described as 5 feet 10 inches tall, weighing 170 pounds, with blue eyes and brown hair. Officials warned that Brown is believed to be armed and extremely dangerous.

Then on Saturday, authorities appeared to have a major break in the search for Brown, as they found where he had left his truck, which greatly shrank the area where he might be hiding out:

A white Ford F-150 that Michael Paul Brown drove was found, but Brown “was not located in or around the vehicle,” Montana Division of Criminal Investigation Administrator Lee Johnson said at a news conference late Friday.

Authorities are now focusing their search in the mountains near Stumptown Road, west of Anaconda, where the shooting took place, Johnson said. A Montana Department of Justice spokesperson said Saturday multiple local, state and federal agencies are searching for Brown on the ground and in the air around Stumptown Road.

There was also more information released about the four victims in the shooting, as I wrote:

One bartender and three patrons will killed during the incident, according to law enforcement officials.

Montana Authorities Get Major Break in Anaconda Bar Shooting Investigation As Manhunt Continues

Now, Lewis and Clark County Sheriff Leo Dutton's office says they have him in custody after the eight-day manhunt:

[The man] suspected of killing four people in a Montana bar last week was captured on Friday, according to local law enforcement officials . The arrest ends a manhunt that lasted eight days as law enforcement officers searched brushy terrain outside the small town of Anaconda.

Details of where and how the man, Michael P. Brown, was taken into custody were not immediately provided by officials.  Mr. Brown, 45, had fled into the foothills near the town after the shooting in the Owl Bar, a neighborhood tavern, on Aug. 1, the authorities said.

...

Eric Hempstead, the owner of another local bar, said it appeared that Mr. Brown had been apprehended a few hundred yards away from Mr. Hempstead’s roadside tavern, the Ranch Bar.

The report added that "[r]elatives of the suspect said he had a long history of mental illness after serving as an armor crewman in the Army."

NBC News Montana confirmed the news, and gave more details on the reward for Brown's capture:

We also now know the names and ages of the victims in the horrific shooting:

A bartender and three patrons were killed in the shooting. Officials identified them as Nancy Lauretta Kelley, 64; Daniel Edwin Baillie, 59; David Allen Leach, 70; and Tony Wayne Palm, 74.

This is a developing story, so details are still emerging. RedState will provide updates as more informatio becomes available.
