NextImg:New: Details of Minnesota Assassin's Letter Revealed, and It's Pretty Clear Why the Story Disappeared

Details about a letter written by Minnesota assassin Vance Boelter have been released, and they paint a much clearer picture of his state of mind and why he did what he did. They also give a pretty good indication of why this story disappeared from the news so quickly.

As RedState reported. Boelter killed State Rep. Melissa Hortman and her husband and also shot and wounded State Sen. John Hoffman and his wife. The shootings took place on Saturday, launching an expansive manhunt to catch the murderer. He was finally apprehended late Sunday evening.

At the time, there was a lot of conflicting information about what may have motivated Boelter, with Republicans being broadly blamed by the press and Democrats because of who the targets were. Networks like MSNBC and CNN went so far as to directly point the finger at President Donald Trump. Yet, a letter that was found the day of the shootings in Boelter's car points in a completely different direction.

According to the Star Tribune, Minnesota's largest newspaper, Boelter believed he was operating under orders from Democrat Gov. Tim Walz, best known for his role as Kamala Harris' running mate during the 2024 election.

Early on, it was revealed that Boelter was appointed to a government workforce board by Walz. What their actual relationship was remains unclear, but it appears the killer thought they had a relationship. For whatever reason, Boelter had convinced himself that he needed to kill others so that Walz could run for the U.S. Senate. As noted, though, the Minnesota governor had already ruled out a run when Sen. Tina Smith announced her retirement.

In other words, Boelter is just an insane person. Nothing in his letter makes logical sense, and there is no indication he did what he did in support of Trump or anyone else on the political right. Instead, he seems to have been infatuated with Walz and created a justification to kill in service to him.

To be clear, I don't think Walz holds any responsibility here. Yes, he's been using some rather colorful and inciting language lately to attack his political opponents, but in this case, the targets were other Democrats. I don't think Walz's deranged rants against ICE and Trump were a motivating factor.

With that said, Walz obviously knew about what was in the letter from day one, given that it was found almost immediately in the car abandoned by Boelter. Yet, he and his Democrat colleagues still spent days insinuating the motive was related to right-wing rhetoric. To put it lightly, that was a pretty terrible thing to do.

Again, I don't blame Walz here. Crazy people do crazy things, and Boelter was irrational and confused at best. But the governor should have been honest about that instead of letting Democrats and the press go wild, pretending this was Trump's fault. That he insinuated that in his presser and then sat by while false narratives prolifered is another black mark against him and his character.
