The mess in the Los Angeles area is spreading. Local authorities range from uncooperative to downright rebellious. Now the mess has spread up to the Verdugo Mountains and the San Fernando Valley - yes, the Valley immortalized by Frank Zappa in his song "Valley Girl." In this latest case, the city of Glendale, which exists in those areas, is backing out of a contract with Immigration & Customs Enforcement (ICE) to house illegal immigrant detainees.
So, apparently, making it more difficult for federal immigration authorities to carry out their lawful duties to remove criminal illegal aliens is reflecting the core value of "public safety."
Gag me with a spoon.
While this is a bit different than openly defying federal authorities and actually interfering with them, since this is a service contract the city entered into with ICE, some of the claims from their press release are a bit curious.
This is a local decision and was not made lightly. Since 2007, the City has maintained a highly regulated, locally controlled facility that is maintained to the highest standards, extending basic dignities to those temporarily held—ensuring access to clean accommodations, on-call medical care, family visitation, and legal counsel. By offering local access, detainees were given due-process proximity that is too often lacking in more remote or privately-operated detention centers.
Now wait just a moment here; Glendale had, because of their contract with ICE, been able to claim that these legally detained illegal aliens had clean accommodations, on-call medical care, family visitation, and legal counsel. So now, by cancelling that contract, they are assuring that the illegal aliens will instead be held in "more remote or privately-operated" detention centers.
What part of that makes sense? But wait! The city of Glendale is even acknowledging that this is precisely the case (emphasis added):
The City Manager's decision to end this contract was made after careful evaluation of legal, operational, and community considerations. We acknowledge with regret that some families may now face greater difficulty visiting loved ones held by ICE, and that access to legal counsel may be more limited elsewhere. Our facility offered clean, secure, climate-controlled pods with continuous access to seating areas, telephones, televisions, restrooms, showers, drinking water, and meals, as well as access to virtual and in-person visitation with loved ones — a standard not always met in other facilities.
Oof. Or, as Moon Unit Zappa might say, fer sure, fer sure.
Here we have a classic example of a jurisdiction catering to the mob. They've decided to make life more difficult for federal immigration authorities and, by extension, the Trump administration. In so doing, they are pandering to an angry mob. They even admit, in plain text, at least twice in one press release, that this decision will make life harder on the detainees and any family members they may have in the community, but they're doing it anyway.
There's no sense in this. But then, the left isn't known for having much sense, especially where this issue is concerned.

Expect more of this kind of grandstanding from some of the various municipalities in Los Angeles County and the surrounding areas, even in the places not yet under attack by rebels. We're not anywhere near seeing an end to this yet.
