NextImg:New: China Objects To Trump's Golden Dome, Because Of Course They Do

On Tuesday, in the Oval Office, President Trump and Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth, along with several other notables, announced their plans for the Golden Dome defense system. It's an ambitious project with enormous implications, if it works.

So, of course, China is already objecting to the project.

China is concerned by President Donald Trump's proposal for a new U.S. missile defense system, called the Golden Dome, which is designed to protect against adversarial attacks on America.

Golden Dome has a "strong offensive nature and violates the principle of peaceful use in the Outer Space Treaty," Chinese Foreign Minister Mao Ning said Wednesday.

"The project will heighten the risk of turning space into a war zone and creating a space arms race, and shake the international security and arms control system," Mao said. "We urge the U.S. to give up developing and deploying global anti-missile system."

Both China and Russia have placed offensive weapons in space, like anti-satellite capabilities that could potentially be used to try to take the U.S. offline, American intelligence officials have warned.

Take note of the dissonance here; it's OK for China and Russia to put offensive weapons in space, but it's not OK for the United States to announce the development of a system that would, among other things, protect us from... offensive weapons in space.

This is Cold War rhetoric in its original form. The other side - then the Soviet Union, now Russia and China - objects vociferously to any attempts by the United States to ramp up even defensive capacity, while stubbornly insisting that any aggression or weapons-building on their own part is an exercise of their right to national defense.

Plus ça change, plus c'est la même chose.

Tsar Vladimir I's people have also weighed in:

The Kremlin, meanwhile, said the Golden Dome project could prompt talks on strategic arms control between Russia and the U.S.

Well, that has a familiar ring to it - at least if one was around for the end of the Cold War.

We can argue about the cost, the projected timeline, and the capability of the Golden Dome all day long, but the one thing we know is that it's a defensive weapon. Even China admits this, calling it a "global anti-missile system." In other words, a system that would make it harder for another country, be it China, North Korea, or Burkina Faso, to strike the American homeland with ballistic missiles, cruise missiles, or drones. That's what "defensive" means.

We should note that the United States is not only working on building up its defensive capacity.

The U.S. completed its first of a new type of nuclear gravity bomb almost a year ahead of schedule.

U.S. Secretary of Energy Chris Wright made the announcement at the Pantex Plant in Texas. The first B61-13 gravity bomb, the latest modification to the B61 family of nuclear weapons, has a greater yield than its predecessor.

Development of the B61-13 will cost an estimated $92 million over the next four years, according to budget documents.

The first unit was assembled nearly a year before the initial target date, according to the Department of Energy's National Nuclear Security Administration.

That is, of course, a weapon that we hope to never see used.

Thanks to President Trump and Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth's leadership, the warrior ethos is coming back to America's military.
