There would seem to be some cracks developing in the Democratic dike.
Oh, sure, there have always been Democrats from swing districts or districts beset by specific problems who set their constituents' needs above the party and vote alongside the GOP to get something done. But somehow, this feels more like a turning tide; several House Democrats have sided with the Republicans to withhold Small Business Administration services from sanctuary jurisdictions - places that, to put it bluntly, harbor and protect illegal aliens. The first such relevant vote passed 211 to 199, with five Democrats crossing the aisle.
A pair of bills cracking down on sanctuary cities passed the House of Representatives this week — with the support of multiple Democrats.
On Thursday, the House passed a bill to withdraw Small Business Administration (SBA) services from jurisdictions that shelter illegal immigrants.
The legislation passed the House in a 211 to 199 vote, with five Democrats joining the GOP: Reps. Henry Cuellar of Texas, Laura Gillen of New York, Don Davis of North Carolina, Jared Golden of Maine and Marie Gluesenkamp Perez of Washington.
Now, the specifics: Henry Cuellar (D-TX) has long been opposed to the Biden policies on unchecked, uncontrolled illegal immigration, so his vote's not too surprising. New York, North Carolina, and Washington are all states that have issues with illegal immigration. Maine, rather less so, but perhaps Jared Golden (D-ME) was having an attack of conscience.
The second bill, which passed on Friday morning, would add explicit language banning people in the U.S. illegally from obtaining SBA loans.
Eight Democrats voted for that legislation — Perez, Cuellar, Gillen and Davis all voted for the bill, along with Reps. Tom Suozzi of New York, Josh Harder of California, Marcy Kaptur of Ohio and Kristen McDonald Rivet of Michigan.
This seems like a no-brainer, making it a head-scratcher as to why anyone would vote against it at all, but the same five Democrats did support it, along with the four others named.
So why did these Democrats join Republicans in these two votes? Well, I can't read minds, nor can anyone else. But it's reasonable to think that this may be the first signs of a semblance of reality returning to national Democrats. The party has been supporting uncontrolled, unchecked, unvetted, and unlimited illegal immigration for so long, along with other wildly unpopular policies, that some clues are returning.

A political party - any political party - can't continue to stand on the wrong side of 80-20 or even 95-5 issues and retain any national relevance. That's precisely what the AOC/Crockett/Harris wing of the party wants to do. But Democrats from swing districts, as well as Democrats from districts where this is a problem - and there are a lot of those - may be thinking really long and really hard about what the Democrat "leadership" is thinking. That leadership is a big liability, and that has to be crossing some of these folks' minds as well. What passes for leadership in the Democratic Party today is either 1) fossilized, 2) nuts, or 3) both.
Is it possible that the times, they are a'changing? For the sake of future Republican victories, we should hope not. But we should also reflect that the Democrats won't keep losing elections forever; sooner or later, the Democratic Party will take up a collection and buy themselves a clue or two.
Thanks to President Trump, illegal immigration into our great country has virtually stopped. Despite the radical left's lies, new legislation wasn't needed to secure our border, just a new president.
