Today on Capitol Hill...

Look, I get that they need breaks — we all do — and it's important to spend time back in their respective districts/states. (As an aside, where is Sen. Adam Schiff (D-CA-cough) spending this "State Work Period"?) But it's a bit less enjoyable writing on the critters when they're not in session. That doesn't mean they give us nothing to work with, though — take Rep. Nancy Pelosi (D-CA)...please!

White House What's Up

President Donald Trump had an eventful Thursday, signing executive orders,  nominating a new appointee to the Federal Reserve Board, holding an Oval Office event marking the many economic successes of his presidency, and honoring Purple Heart recipients.

Friday's another busy day for President Trump. He's greeting and meeting with first the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia, and then the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan. Then, he'll participate in a Trilateral Signing with the Prime Minister of the Republic of Armenia and the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan.

Also on Friday, Vice President JD Vance will meet with Foreign Secretary David Lammy of the United Kingdom to "discuss a variety of topics pertaining to the US-UK relationship."

And, this being the three-year anniversary of the infamous FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago (which I'll discuss more fully below), one highly suspects there will be a Truth Social post or some other remarks from President Trump marking the occasion.

Full Court Press...

In U.S. v. Boelter (regarding the horrific shootings/murders of Minnesota lawmakers and their spouses in June), Vance Boelter pled not guilty at his arraignment on Thursday.

Shortly after the Supreme Court decision in the CASA case (regarding nationwide injunctions and birthright citizenship), we got an odd "indicative ruling" out of Maryland District Court Judge Deborah Boardman confirming that if she had the jurisdiction to do so (she did not at that moment, due to the case being up on appeal before the 4th Circuit), she would, indeed grant plaintiffs' motion for a class-wide injunction. In late July, the 4th Circuit dismissed the appeal to return jurisdiction to the district court and allow for Judge Boardman to rule on the motion for class certification and the requested injunction — which she now has:

Safe to say Boardman's rulings will now be appealed back up to the 4th Circuit and, in all likelihood, make their way back to the Supreme Court in the next term.

The details are still being sorted out, but the Trump-Putin Summit appears to be a go for late next week.

Okay, I alluded to it above — today, of course, is the three-year anniversary of the FBI raid on Mar-a-Lago. First, I want to take a moment to marvel at how much has transpired since. It's...well, it's a lot more than you would think would fit into a mere three years. A lot. And, as the saying goes, "Oh, how the worm has turned."

There's no other way to slice it: August 8, 2022, was a damn dark day. And I don't think it matters (or should matter) whether you love President Trump, hate him, or are ambivalent about him — the home of a former president was raided by our government. Yes, yes, I know they alerted Secret Service ahead of time and didn't bust doors down — and also, thankfully, the president and first lady were not present at the time. Still, it was a significant intrusion. And for what again?

Oh, yeah — allegedly for classified documents. Sort of like the ones Joe Biden had stashed at the Penn Biden Center...and in his garage, next to the Corvette. No wait! Remember what we were told shortly after the raid? They were searching for nuclear documents! As Bonchie observed at the time:

So let me get this straight. Donald Trump possessed nuclear documents that were so important they warranted an FBI raid, but the government waited 18 months to execute the raid and then made zero arrests? You know, because the government is famous for not arresting people for stealing nuclear secrets. Sounds totally legit, right?

Setting that aside, I think it's important to look back and consider what the U.S. government, via Merrick Garland's Justice Department and the FBI, did three years ago today. Yeah, it spooked me — like very little else has in my (almost) 57 years. Even if we take at face value the notion that Trump had improperly retained possession of various documents, the way this was handled, the raid, the subsequent prosecution — it wasn't just about getting Trump (though that was an obvious aim). It was a message to every single one of us: If we can do this to him, we can do this to any of you. What a sick, sinister thing to do. What a sad, ugly place we were in at the time.

I'm extraordinarily grateful for how far we've come since. And...I do have to wonder if maybe some of those documents were nuclear — metaphorically speaking...

As one does...
