America has lost its sense of humor. Maybe the whole world has. I’m certainly not alone in that observation. My RedState colleagues Jeff Charles and Kira Davis recently remarked on it in the “How Inappropriate!” podcast as they contemplated the movie “Blazing Saddles” and whether it could be made today – spoiler alert: It couldn’t. Another colleague, Bob Hoge, noted it in his recent review of SNL’s weak comedic sauce.

There are countless examples of TV shows, movies, comic books, and stand-up routines having the fun sucked out of them because we’ve entered an era where tipping the wrong sacred cow can get you canceled – permanently. There’s a world of difference between tempering remarks out of kindness or just good manners and censoring any and all expression that pokes at an increasingly narrow and rigid narrative.

The advent of social media and a largely-online life have given the humorless scolds a whiff of power and they’re wielding it like vengeful tyrants. Humor hasn’t evolved – it’s been sacrificed on the altar of progressive ideals.

We’ve forgotten how to laugh – at life, at one another, and most importantly, at ourselves. What that really means is: We’ve lost perspective – and it’s robbed us of our sense of joy.

They say laughter is the best medicine – I say we could all use a healthy dose of good humor right about now.
