NextImg:Media Turns Alabama Social Worker Into the New 'Maryland Man,' and DHS Isn't Having It

Democrats and the mainstream media are constantly on the lookout for examples of alleged ICE overreach involving someone who supposedly was wrongly detained and/or deported, or someone whom they can otherwise try to sympathetically portray, even if they are an illegal immigrant whom DHS has the authority to deport.

They’ve claimed, for instance, that young children who were U.S. citizens were deported out of the country, even though the real story was their mothers were illegal immigrants who were facing deportation and who chose to take them with them.

There was also the story of the media-described "LA mother" who was allegedly "abducted" in a Jack in the Box parking lot in late June by "bounty hunters" and was allegedly taken to a warehouse after refusing to self-deport. Two weeks later, however, the woman, an organizer with the Alliance of Californians for Community Empowerment, was seen by investigators unharmed in a shopping center parking lot. She was taken into custody by the feds on grounds that she had made up the whole story.

The latest ICE detainee we're supposed to believe was a victim of ICE overreach concerns an Alabama woman, 24-year-old Giovanna Hernandez, who was picked up after allegedly driving erratically on a highway.

Ms. Hernandez is a social worker, according to media reports, and one whose family and community are rallying around her in hopes she'll be allowed to stay in Alabama:

Friends and family of an Alabama social worker detained by U.S. immigration authorities are pushing for her release days after she was pulled over for an alleged speeding violation, a case that reflects the broad sweep of President Donald Trump's immigration crackdown.

Giovanna Hernandez, 24, was stopped by local police while driving on Tuesday morning in her hometown of Leeds, near Birmingham, according to her brother, Dilan Hernandez. She was taken to a county jail and is now in U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement custody there, ICE's detainee locator showed.

Hernandez's parents brought her to the U.S. from Mexico at age 7, her brother said. She was valedictorian of her high school class, has bachelor's and master's degrees in social work, and works with young people applying for college through a local non-profit organization, he said.

According to DHS, however, the Alabama social worker was doing more than just speeding:

This sob story being pushed by @Reuters is PATHETIC. Here are the FACTS: Giovanna Hernandez Martinez was tailgating a law enforcement vehicle, passed them erratically at 80 MPH, and cut them off. Upon witnessing this reckless driving, ICE and local police initiated a traffic stop and discovered she was an illegal alien from Mexico.

Nowhere in the Reuters piece is it mentioned that Hernandez Martinez, who a friend described as a "church-going girl," is an immigration-focused social worker whose specialty is helping illegal immigrants avoid deportation:

As a social worker with the Hispanic Immigration Coalition of Alabama (HICA), her mission has been to protect others from the devastating reality of deportation.

Now, she’s the one in ICE custody facing the very same fate she’s dedicated her career to helping others avoid.

Interestingly, some family members say HICA has done little or nothing to help their employee.

The statement from the Leeds chief of police may also be of interest to readers:

Chief Paul Irwin said the traffic stop was made on Tuesday at about 7:44 a.m. on Interstate 20 when an unmarked Leeds vehicle was passed by a Honda sedan “at a high rate of speed of over 80 mph.

“The vehicle came within feet of striking other vehicles and erratically changed lanes. A marked unit with the Leeds Police Department stopped the vehicle,” Irwin’s statement continued.

“The driver did not have a driver’s license, but instead identified herself with a Mexico issued (identification) card. Pursuant to our policy, Detectives contacted our federal partners, who informed Detectives that the female was in the United States of America illegally.

“Our federal partners responded to the scene and took custody of the driver. This vehicle was stopped because she posed a danger to the public by driving in a reckless manner.”

[...]

“There are many people that I know and have friendships with who know this person and we wish her the best as she returns to her country,” Irwin said.

As it almost always is, there is more to these stories than we were originally told, and this one is no exception.
