NextImg:Mamdani's Affordable Housing Plan Doomed to Fail

It's as predictable as the sun coming up in the morning. A socialist or, in this case, an outright communist candidate for office starts spouting the various far-left schemes, like rent controls. When it's (correctly) noted that those policies fail every time they're tried, the candidate doubles down on stupid, normally claiming that "that wasn't real socialism" and "all we need are the right people in charge." This is a fundamental law of the universe, which shall henceforth be known as "Clark's Law of Socialist Top Men," which states, "Socialist candidates will always claim previous failures are due, not to the stupidity of the policy, but due to not having the right Top Men in charge."

Zohran Mamdani is a classic presentation of this, with his far-left stances including, among other stupid things, rent controls. Another New York Democrat, former Assemblyman Kenny Burgos, is warning the people of New York that Mamdani's plan is doomed to fail, as these plans always do.

A former New York City Democratic assembly member, who now runs the New York Apartment Association, tells Fox News Digital that socialist mayoral candidate Zohran Mamdani’s rent freeze plan would be disastrous for the city’s housing crisis.

"His proposal to freeze the rent on rent-stabilized housing, which is almost 40% of housing stock within New York City, a housing stock that is already under the stress by which the NYU Furman Center has categorized as 200,000 units functionally bankrupt. A rent freeze would be the nail in the coffin on this housing stock," NYAA CEO Kenny Burgos told Fox News Digital.

"So if he's attempting to achieve affordability, what he's instead going to achieve is insolvency."

T'was always thus, with communists. And this is only one of Zohran Mamdani's dumb ideas; he's also in favor of things like government-run grocery stores, which would laregly drive the small mom-and-pop grocers (if any are left in the face of New York's many problems) out of business.

We can see it now, the end result of the implementation of Zohran Mamdani's schemes: New York's dirty streets, the occasional still-open city grocery outlet servicing a long, long line of gray-clad subjects, waiting in line for the month's potato ration.

Kenny Burgos, on the other hand, seems more in touch with economic realities.

Burgos told Fox News Digital that the housing problem in the first place was "perpetuated by the government."

"Government controls most of the costs that goes into housing, the largest of which is property taxes and when it comes to rent-stabilized housing, the government caps the revenues on this housing," Burgos explained. "So if we were to solve this affordability crisis, we have to begin by decreasing the cost to operating housing. First step is property tax. Next will be insurance, then we can talk labor, fuel, water. There's a host of costs that the government has impact on, and we have to have these conversations as opposed to just capping rents."

Look at that - a Democrat with some grasp of market forces and business. Maybe he should run for Mayor.

New York has some big choices to make in this mayoral election. It's not looking like any of them can promise any miraculous turnaround; it seems likely New Yorkers are going to have to suffer some more abuse from leftist politicians before they might take a look at even another Giuliani. But Zohran Mamdani would be an utter disaster; we can hope that New Yorkers will have a collective rush of brains to the head and, on November 4th, elect any of the candidates other than the commie Mamdani.

Editor’s Note: Zohran Mamdani is an avowed Democratic Socialist and has a real chance to become the next mayor of New York City.
