NextImg:It's Over, Cuomo Caved: Communist Candidate Has Pushed Him Aside

Ever notice how there are some moments in politics where you can point to a printed page or a screen and say, "Look, there, a political career just ended." I remember doing that on a couple of occasions, such as Howard Dean's infamous "Dean scream" moment from the 2004 presidential primaries. There have been many such, and now we very likely have seen one more, as former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo has officially struck his campaign tent and conceded the New York City mayoral primary to his communist opponent, Zohran Mamdani.

It's hard to see anyone coming back from this.

Andrew Cuomo will drop out of the mayor’s race after his humiliating defeat against socialist Zohran Mamdani, sources told The Post — as the ex-governor’s donors and backers desert him and weigh whether to boost Eric Adams.

Several insiders close to the Cuomo camp said Wednesday that the thrice-elected Democrat will almost certainly not run in the general election as an independent candidate, seeing no obvious path to victory.

“The understanding is he’s not running, every indication is that he doesn’t want to do it and the money wouldn’t be there even if he did want to do it,” said one of the sources, a leader from a prominent union.

Cuomo’s bruised backers are eyeing shifting their support — to Adams or even an independent candidate — after the former gov faceplanted in Tuesday’s Democratic mayoral primary to dark-horse left-wing hopeful Mamdani.

Shifting support to Eric Adams would be the smart play. Here's why.

Mamdani's primary win came primarily from rich white liberals and (oddly, perhaps) Asian-American residents who would be least affected by the far-left policies Mamdani would pursue as mayor, should he win the election. He was trailing among voters in almost every other demographic, which is the advantage that Eric Adams should press home. Mayor Adams is, at the moment, not polling well, but here's the thing about leftist candidates like Mamdani - every time they open their mouths, they damage themselves.

The smart play, of course, would be for Adams and Republican Curtis Sliwa to make some kind of a deal, to present a unified front against the commie Mamdani. (That has a nice ring to it - "the commie Mamdani." Yeah, that's a keeper.) They may be able to send the communist Democrat packing if they work together and put the good of the city ahead of politics.

Yeah, I know, I had a hard time writing that with a straight face, too.

We're already seeing the results of just the primary election; some New Yorkers are heading for greener pastures, and at least one former resident isn't happy about this result:

There are, though, already indications that the NYC Democrat establishment may be coming around to the communist:

The floodgates of establishment support in the city appeared to be opened by Brooklyn Democratic Party leader Rodneyse Bichotte Hermelyn, who posted on X that she’d support Mamdani in the general election after backing Cuomo in the primary.

“To everyone who had reservations, I ask you to put them aside in this moment and come together for the future of our city and our party,” she wrote. “Mamdani has show he is committed to representing all Democrats from every neighborhood and borough, as evidenced by his overwhelming victory in Brooklyn and across the city.

“Let’s unite as Democrats for a brighter future for our city.”

It won't be a brighter future. I'll offer a prediction: New York will suffer for this, should Mandani win the general. As is universally the case, those who can flee, those who have the resources, those who pay most of the taxes, will bail. If the commie Mamdani wins the general mayoral election, NYC will have a darker, not a brighter, future.

As I wrote yesterday, barring some upset between now and November, the people of New York City are about to get the government they voted for, good and hard.
