NextImg:Is Trump Coming for Chicago? Dem Alderman Says Mayor and Gov. Pritzker Hate President More Than Criminals

Democrats and the left have taught us that one of the most acute symptoms of Trump Derangement Syndrome (TDS) is a knee-jerk negative response to anything President Donald Trump proposes or does. A popular joke is that if Trump found a cure for cancer, Democrats would wail and moan that he was putting healthcare workers out of a job. Now, in the wake of Trump's crackdown on crime in one of America's most dangerous cities, the nation's capital of Washington, D.C., Democrats across the country are siding with criminals (as you would expect). But are there other cities on the list for crackdowns on crime?

Raymond Lopez is a Chicago city Alderman. He is a Democrat, but he is not afraid to call out his own party. On Tuesday, he appeared on Newsmax TV's "Rob Schmitt Tonight," where he discussed with host Rob Schmitt Trump's decision to call up the National Guard to help address the city's out-of-control crime problem. Lopez talked about the crime problem in the Windy City and what could be of help to residents there. He stated that "We (Chicago) don't need" the National Guard, but also said:

“...what we do need is the FBI, the ATF, and many of the other members of the federal government who can go after those cartels, go after those drug dealers, go after those human traffickers that have been operating within the city of Chicago for the past 20 years.” But Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D) and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson “are going to use their hatred for Donald Trump to say no, to say we don’t want federal intrusion, but we do want federal money.”

He added bluntly, “You have politicians in my own party who are enamored with the dangerous criminals in our streets.” He continued, “We should always be welcoming of the federal government’s ability to help us maintain safe communities, safe cities, and a safe country." While the media does its due diligence, propping up Mayor Brandon Johnson, it reported that in June, Chicago saw a 33 percent decrease in homicides for the first six months of 2025, compared to the same period in 2024. However, the Medical Examiner's Office reports that there are 323 deaths where the manner of death is "pending," and some of those could be determined to be homicides. But thefts are up, including misdemeanor theft up four percent, felony theft up 46 percent since 2021, and car thefts are up 75 percent since 2021.

While Washington, D.C. is a unique case, in that it is designated a federal district, the National Guard coming to Chicago might just be a real thing. During his announcement on Monday that the National Guard would be deployed in Washington, D.C., President Trump mentioned that the same could be done in other Democrat-run cities like New York and Chicago, saying:

“And if we need to, we're going to do the same thing in Chicago, which is a disaster. We have a mayor there who's totally incompetent. He's an incompetent man. And we have an incompetent governor there. Pritzker's an incompetent."

Raymond Lopez stated that crime should, of course, be a nonpartisan issue, but also pointed out the one thing that is important to both Mayor Brandon Johnson and Gov. JB Pritzker, and that is federal money. It may be the one thing Trump can use to get Johnson and Pritzker to pay attention. He said:

"And I think, at the end of the day, that’s what’s going to give Donald Trump leverage over the city of Chicago, the county of Cook, and the state of Illinois, because 22% of our budget comes from the federal government. And I think he’s going to be able to play that card to them and say, if you want the money, then we’re coming with it.”

Brandon Johnson and JB Pritzker may have to decide what they love more: criminals or government money.
