Some of us are old (and gray) enough to remember when the "media" was on paper, backed up by three television networks - if you were lucky enough to live in an area where you could get all three from your roof-mounted television aerial. Those days are long gone, what with the rise of the internet and the alternative media, a sample of which you are reading right now.
But the big three television networks, ABC, NBC, and CBS, are still around. They are now part of what some of us call the "legacy media," but may also be quite honestly called the "liberal media," for their long-term, well-established leftist slant.
CBS News, though, has a new Editor-in-Chief, Bari Weiss, and it sure looks like she aims to shake things up some.
Bari Weiss, who was named editor-in-chief of CBS News on Monday after her outlet, The Free Press, was acquired by Paramount for $150 million, said in her first memo to staffers that she wants Democrats and Republicans held equally accountable.
"The opportunity to build on that legacy with you — and to renew it in an era that so desperately needs it — is an extraordinary privilege. Right now, I imagine you have some questions. I do, too," Weiss wrote in a memo obtained by Fox News Digital.
"My goal in the coming days and weeks is to get to know you. I want to hear from you about what’s working, what isn’t, and your thoughts on how we can make CBS News the most trusted news organization in America and the world. I’ll approach it the way any reporter would — with an open mind, a fresh notebook, and an urgent deadline," Weiss continued.
That's not a bad statement, although it may rattle a few cages in the CBS newsrooms. And those cages, mind you, could use a little rattling, every day and twice on Sunday. But it's Bari Weiss's ten-point list of journalistic values that's really interesting.
- Journalism that reports on the world as it actually is.
- Journalism that is fair, fearless, and factual.
- Journalism that respects our audience enough to tell the truth plainly—wherever it leads.
- Journalism that makes sense of a noisy, confusing world.
- Journalism that explains things clearly, without pretension or jargon.
- Journalism that holds both American political parties to equal scrutiny.
- Journalism that embraces a wide spectrum of views and voices so that the audience can contend with the best arguments on all sides of a debate.
- Journalism that rushes toward the most interesting and important stories, regardless of their unpopularity.
- Journalism that uses all of the tools of the digital era.
- Journalism that understands that the best way to serve America is to endeavor to present the public with the facts, first and foremost.
There's a lot of emphasis there on facts and telling the truth. The problem is, the truth, with a lot of these people, is a moving target.

Ms. Weiss took over at CBS News after her website, The Free Press, was acquired by Paramount for $150 million. Before that, she worked at the Wall Street Journal and then at the New York Times, which job she resigned from after the Times left her twisting in the breeze, failing to defend her from harassment from her colleagues for not toeing the liberal line. Now, she's pressuring CBS news staffers to (gasp) treat both Republicans and Democrats equally? To find facts? To tell the truth? That's a novel notion for the legacy media.
Bari Weiss is not exactly a mainstream conservative. She describes herself as a "left-leaning centrist." But it's not her political views that are in the forefront here, but rather her journalistic skills and integrity - and her leadership ability. She's facing a big, bloated organization with many entrenched legacy media adherents. It's not an easy job ahead. The beast may well try to devour her, but Bari Weiss seems to understand that when you're riding a tiger, the trick is to keep a good grip on its ears.
We wish her the best of luck at CBS. Maybe she'll be able to turn them around.
