The news came over the weekend that MSNBC decided to cancel Joy Reid’s 7:00 pm broadcast “The Reid Out.” It was an announcement that made perfect sense to most people, all while feeling somewhat surprising. Her program has long been a drain on the ratings and common sense thinkers at the network, yet Reid was such an entrenched figure one felt she was insulated from accountability.
Not to suggest her demise was not warranted; you just felt a bit surprised that it actually happened. Her presence delivered the paradox of perpetual inevitability, much like the Oakland A’s moving to Las Vegas, Yanni concerts ending, or the Steak & Ale restaurants closing down; you never knew anyone who enjoyed those low-quality entries, and yet they were always lingering in defiance of popular opinion.
For seemingly ever, Reid was a fixture at MSNBC and was always roped in to the panels covering live events, such as the presidential debates, political conventions, and the November election. This was the case despite a glaring reality: Her ratings have been notably and consistently poor.
For years now, the network seemed very willing to overlook one inescapable fact – she literally drove viewers away. The case has long been that “The Reid Out” would see a drop in audience figures from her 6:00 pm lead-in (normally “The Beat” with Ari Melber), only to see the numbers recover for Chris Hayes on “All In” immediately following. She was actually repelling entrenched MSNBC viewers
This was because Reid was appealing to a subset of the already insulated audience for the network. Her brand of racial grievance and crackpot theories was a case of not only preaching to the converted, but delivering a sermon for only the POC members of the choir. It takes a special skill to turn away those who are already willing to harbor white guilt but cannot tolerate the incessant reliance on racial grievance.
Reid was so dependable on this front that not only was racism a quotidian subject line for her, but it meant that any topic was sure to be steered in the direction of being caused or influenced by racism. It led to her making entirely mind-melting conclusions at times, as she would begin and end with the case being racist, facts not all an important element.
Here are just a few of her choice examples of cogent analysis (and not at all a comprehensive list):
So it was “racist” to remove the white Joe Biden so a black candidate could run against the racist Trump, who managed to earn more support from racist black voters. Oh…kay, then…
But beyond these pervasive and never-ending racial rants, Ms. Reid was also a source of some completely unhinged conspiracy theories and proclamations of a bat-guano level of lunacy, that she deserved more credit. Ms. Reid had a magical ability to look into issues few were upset about and find details one can only discover after consuming codeine cough syrup laced with moonshine.
Joy was also a good source of quackery on mundane topics on the regular. Take something few were upset about, and Joy could find the nefarious side of that subject.

To put a capper on this, I will not declare this example to be the worst thing she has ever offered up, but in terms of serving as a quintessential example of Joy Reid, this typifies the woman nicely. In it, she hits all her classic notes: unhinged opposition to Republicans, fever-dream levels of conspiracy, and — of course — racism.
We will try to explain things, but it almost defies such an effort: She looked at Alabama’s recent IVF law and declared this was because Republicans want more children, and she seems to think this is meant to create more child laborers, done in order to push out immigrant workers, the result being Republicans want child slaves to work in our fields.
She says this even though slavery is illegal and child labor is also illegal...but those racists do not want the immigrants doing this. The result is that Reid must be in favor of illegal immigration, and this also means she is in favor of retaining the immigrant slaves…we…guess? If you can make sense of this, please share your brand of potable that got you to understand.
In a fitting coda to the end of her tenure at the network, one of her frequent guests — Elie Mystal — declared appropriately that her termination had to do with race. That MSNBC will be replacing Reid with three POC hosts in her time slot is just another dose of inconvenient facts.
The initial declaration of Joy’s firing stated she would be giving farewell shows this week, but now that appears to be a question mark. It seems the dispatched hostess has been missing since the announcement, and there is a question as of now if she will even return.
Suffice it to say at the network there are plenty of sad and very nervous employees. There is no Joy in Throwing Mud-ville.
Major shakeups are occurring across mainstream media networks as radical, left-wing talking heads are being shown the door. The leftist media are losing the ideological battle for America in real-time.
