Even with being under no delusions about the political and cultural composition of New York City, it still blows my mind that a guy like Zohran Mamdani could very well be elected its next mayor.
Though oversimplified, this tidbit from NBC News, noting the demographic shifts, perhaps best explains why the Big Apple finds itself in this position today as it relates to the mayoral race:
New York’s mayoral contest has fully surfaced a tension bubbling in city politics for years: the divide between lifelong New Yorkers and young professionals who have recently moved in.
In his 7-point Democratic primary win over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in June, state Assemblyman Zohran Mamdani cleaned up with younger voters who live in some of New York’s most gentrified neighborhoods ...
It is with that in mind that we turn to the second anniversary of the October 7th Hamas terrorist attacks against Israeli civilians, a day that, for millions, will never be forgotten, especially among those in the Jewish community.

Though it doesn't seem to have hurt him much, if any, in the polls, Mamdani, a DSA member, has faced heavy criticism from his opponents for his antisemitic, pro-Hamas views, and for his blame the victim approach to the October 7th attacks.
Mamdani, for instance, has repeatedly refused to condemn the antisemitic "globalize the intifada" chant, something that has been uttered often during the pro-Hamas marches in New York City, demonstrations that Mamdani has steadfastly defended and has sometimes attended.
So while it was no surprise to see Mamdani issue the statement he did on the two-year anniversary of the October 7th attacks, it was shocking nevertheless to see how he really didn't even try to temper it despite his purported "outreach" efforts with Jewish leaders.
It started like this:
Two years ago today, Hamas carried out a horrific war crime, killing more than 1,100 Israelis and kidnapping 250 more. I mourn these lives and pray for the safe return of every hostage still held and for every family whose lives were torn apart by these atrocities.
But then:
Understandably, that flat out did not fly with people:
A Mamdani Election Day victory is not inevitable, but it will require a significant number of NYC voters who are currently in his camp to wake up and get real. Sadly, I'm not confident that's even possible anymore, as New York City is like many large blue cities in how it continues to dig itself into deeper holes, of which it can't dig itself out.

I'm not one to tell people how they should vote. But even as detestable as Andrew Cuomo is, one would think he would still be preferable in the city that experienced the largest terrorist attack on American soil in U.S. history, at the hands of the very types of terrorists that Mamdani and his supporters rally behind in present times.
