NextImg:Have You Ever Heard of Anything More Florida? Sunshine State Breaks Ground on 'Alligator Alcatraz'

We told you about President Trump’s desire to reopen the California island prison of Alcatraz. In Florida, however, officials had an idea: let’s build our own. And let’s have it surrounded by alligators.

And that is exactly what they’re doing:

Florida is building a detention facility for migrants nicknamed “Alligator Alcatraz,” turning an airfield in the Everglades into the newest — and scariest-sounding — holding center designed to help the Trump administration carry out its immigration crackdown.

The remote facility, comprised of large tents, and other planned facilities will cost the state around $450 million a year to run, but Florida can request some reimbursement from the Federal Emergency Management Agency, said Tricia McLaughlin, a spokeswoman for the Department of Homeland Security.

Florida’s attorney general described the plan and why it’s a smart move:

Uthmeier explained why it made sense from both an economic and a security standpoint:

Attorney General James Uthmeier here at the Miami-Dade-Collier training facility.

This is an old, virtually abandoned airport facility right in the middle of the Everglades. Florida's been leading on immigration enforcement, supporting the Trump administration and ICE's efforts to detain and deport criminal aliens. The governor [Ron DeSantis] tasked state leaders to identify places for new temporary detention facilities. I think this is the best one, as I call it: Alligator Alcatraz.

It sounds like it could also be called Python Prison:

This 30-square-mile area is completely surrounded by the Everglades. It presents an efficient, low-cost opportunity to build a temporary detention facility because you don't need to invest that much in the perimeter. People get out there, there's not much waiting for them other than alligators and pythons.

Nowhere to go, nowhere to hide.

Uthmeier continued, saying that once construction begins, they could have a facility capable of holding up to 1,000 “criminal aliens” within 30-60 days. “We’re ready to go,” he added.

Indeed, they're already going, because construction started Monday morning, according to a spokesman for the AG.

An Alcatraz Alternative: Former FBI Agent Has a Better Idea

Of course, the usual suspects ranging from anti-Trumpers to immigrant advocates to environmentalists are all infuriated at the “outlandish” plan:

But while environmental groups have slammed the idea — with hundreds gathering at the remote site over the weekend to protest the plan — the project appears to be moving forward.

And quickly.

There's a high chance that I will come across a post on X regarding Alligator Alcatraz asking, “Is this what you voted for?” My answer: yes.

Thanks to President Trump, illegal immigration into our great country has virtually stopped. Despite the radical left's lies, new legislation wasn't needed to secure our border, just a new president.
