Fox News personality and author Steve Hilton is running to be California's next governor, and he’s got some harsh words for failed incumbent Gavin Newsom who has not only watched his state decline in virtually every category, but now is showing a complete lack of leadership as Los Angeles endures its fifth day of anti-ICE rioting. Newsom and Tinseltown Mayor Karen Bass were so ineffective at managing things over a violent weekend that Trump called in the National Guard and some 700 U.S. Marines, much to Newsom’s consternation.
Hilton, in an op-ed Tuesday, mocked the flailing governor for tweeting more than leading. Newsom let things burn so he could troll Trump when the president inevitably responded:
…when President Trump weighed in with his decision to deploy the National Guard, the California Democrat chorus started bleating about 'escalation' and how Trump had 'manufactured' the crisis.
At the heart of it all, the increasingly preposterous figure of Gavin Newsom.
What was his main response to the devastating scenes of chaos unfolding in his state's largest city? Trolling Trump on social media.
What was the only action Newsom has actually taken, Hilton wondered? His answer: filing a lawsuit in the hope that an activist judge would tell Trump to remove the troops. (No such luck so far; a federal judge did not issue a temporary restraining order Tuesday despite Newsom’s request and has scheduled further argument on the issue.)

Although Newsom has been accusing Trump of "manufacturing" the crisis, it’s he himself who has shown a complete failure to lead, Hilton argued in a TV appearance Tuesday:
In his editorial, meanwhile, the GOP gubernatorial candidate said the blame for California’s epic descent into failure isn’t Newsom’s fault alone—there’s plenty of blame to go around.
Gavin Newsom, Karen Bass, Kamala Harris: this is what you get when a party has been in power too long. Machine politicians whose only real skill is playing the political game. Delivering the basics of good governance is a complete afterthought - if it ever occurs at all. Instead it's all about saying the right thing to please the activists who give them their ideological instructions, or the government unions who fund their campaigns.
Hilton is right—the cure will never come as long as the one-party extremist, progressive regime is allowed to run things. The homelessness crisis wasn’t enough to change voting patterns in the deep-blue state, the crime wasn’t enough, the incredibly high taxes where citizens get little in return didn't move the needle, the obsession with kowtowing to illegal aliens instead of Californians didn’t do the job… Nothing seems to change the electorate’s mind on the Left Coast.
One can't help but wonder if a huge number of many Golden State voters are masochists.
Between the disastrous leadership shown before, during and after the catastrophic January wildfires, and the faceplant here with the riots by Bass, Newsom and Co, perhaps that will start to wake people up to the fact the emperor (the regime, in this case) not only has clothes, it appears to have no brain.
