NextImg:Gavin Newsom Gets Terrible News About His Plan To Redstrict After Very His Public Meltdown

With the runaway Texas Democrats folding, it's only a matter of time before the new redistricting plan passes and Republicans pick up five new House seats. The decision to gerrymander the Lone Star State was made in response to states like California, which, despite its "independent commission," has a map that gives Democrats 43 of the 52 states with just 60 percent of the total vote.

By comparison, Texas Republicans won 58 percent of the total vote, yet the split is only 25 to 13 in their favor. Even under the new map in that state, California's district lines will still favor Democrats more than Texas favors Republicans. Yet, Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-CA), desperate to raise his profile for a 2028 presidential run, has decided to be a true hypocrite's hypocrite. He's been crashing out for days, posting in all caps and making threats to gerrymander California past its already absurdly unfair representation.

Underneath all that bluster was a much less certain reality. Because California has an "independent commission" and the state's constitution only allows redistricting every ten years, Newsom and his band of Democrat goons in the legislature can't just draw new maps and pass them. A multi-step referendum would need to pass in a special election, suspending the commission and amending the state constitution.

So how likely is that? Well, according to a new poll, Californians favor keeping the commission and not redistricting by a nearly two-to-one margin.

Admittedly, poll results can be massaged, but in this case, it's hard to argue that left-wing Politico was out to benefit Republicans. The wording of the questions was also not ambiguous. It specifically mentions Newsom's gambit to redistrict in response to Republicans. Still, respondents came nowhere close to providing the necessary majorities that would be needed in a special election to undo the state's redistricting process.

I'm shocked. I thought for sure that Newsom shouting in all-caps would be effective, but here we are.

All of this makes the governor look even more pathetic. He doesn't even have the ear of his deep blue state's electorate on an issue he spent the last two weeks posturing over, writing checks with his mouth that his political ability can't cash.

Does this mean California Democrats won't keep trying? Of course, not, but it's a big initial blow to the narrative that it will be an easy road. We'll see if they can find some judge who invalidates their current maps based on nothing but raw partisanship because we all know that's the backup plan. I don't know what possible legal justification for that would exist, but we all know that's not really a factor.
