French President Emmanuel Macron and his wife, Brigitte, filed a defamation lawsuit against podcaster Candace Owens on Wednesday because Owens has repeatedly claimed that Brigitte Macron is actually a man named "Jean-Michel Trogneux." According to a 200-page complaint filed in a Delaware court, the Macrons object to Owens's claim that Brigitte Macron “was born a man, stole another person’s identity, and transitioned to become Brigitte.”
Brigitte Macron has been the center of longstanding, and completely understandable, rumors that she is a he. To set the proper tone for what follows, please cue up the mood music.
In March 2024, in an act reminiscent of Virginia Representative William Scott responding to a New York Times article placing him at the top of the "Ten Dumbest Members of Congress," by promptly calling a press conference to deny it, the Macrons publicly denied that Brigitte is Jean-Michel.
Owens has been working this story for about a year and a half, so, the research is as solid as you can imagine.
In January, Owens — who has stirred controversy for spouting antisemitic conspiracy theories — ran an eight-part podcast series that obsessed over their May-December romance, according to the complaint.
“I believe that Emmanuel Macron is a homosexual man that was groomed from his youth,” Owens said in one of the episodes.
“I believe the individual who groomed him is now his wife. I believe that his wife was born Jean‑Michel Trogneux and transitioned in his early 30s, and I believe that the entire state is colluding to protect that secret.”
“And like I said, I would stake my entire professional career on all of those points.”
The lawsuit also cited statements made by Owens on her podcast that claimed “Mrs. Macron and President Macron are blood relatives committing incest” and that “President Macron was chosen to be the president of France as part of the CIA‑operated MKUltra program or a similar mind‑control program.”
Another statement cited in the lawsuit quotes Owens as saying that the Macrons “are committing forgery, fraud, and abuses of power to conceal these secrets.”
Owens also used social media to accuse President Macron of violating the law.
She posted on X: “Emmanuel Macron married a man. Which was illegal at the time that he did it.”
She separately posted: “Because his marriage was an illegal act. Emmanuel Macron broke the law when he married his groomer.”
She has responded to the lawsuit with her side of the story.
While this probably will not upset U.S.-France diplomatic relations, it is guaranteed to provide us with some much-needed humor. I foresee a need for a forensic examination of Ms. Macron, with video. The depositions taken during discovery will be riotous. We could retire the national debt just by auctioning off the right to ask questions of Macron under oath.
There is an old story about Lyndon Johnson's first run for the U. S. Senate. Hunter S. Thompson, in his epic book "Fear and Loathing on the Campaign Trail '72," relates the story:
The race was close and Johnson was getting worried. Finally he told his campaign manager to start a massive rumour campaign about his opponent’s life-long habit of enjoying carnal knowledge of his barnyard sows.
“Christ, we can’t get away with calling him a pig-f***er,” the campaign manager protested. “Nobody’s going to believe a thing like that.”
“I know,” Johnson replied. “But let’s make the sonofabitchh deny it.”
I don't know if LBJ is still following American politics, but if he is, he has to be laughing his butt off that Candace Owens has accomplished something he never thought of trying. And whoever told the Macrons this was a good idea should be headed for the guillotine.
