They voted for Donald Trump—not out of blind loyalty, but because they crave practical solutions over political pipe dreams.
Yet Tom and Linda aren’t real — I made them up — but they represent the heartland Americans Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer dreamed up in his head, yet seems to ignore in real life. Instead, he’s spent decades chasing Joe and Eileen Bailey, a fictional Long Island couple he conjured up to guide his political strategy. It’s a head-scratcher that would make Tom and Linda roll their eyes. They had a whole backstory and everything. This is a cinematic universe that DC Comics or Marvel would be envious of.
Scott Jennings, CNN contributor and Salem radio host, posted on X this clip shared by X user Blue Georgia of John Oliver in one of his rare non-biased bits, on "Last Week Tonight." Oliver skewered Schumer’s obsession with the Baileys, a middle-class archetype he introduced in his 2007 book "Positively American," mentioning them 265 times. “Seriously, he invented them,” Oliver deadpanned, likening Schumer’s detailed backstory to a Tolkien epic. This is as bad as Joe Biden's lies. Like seeing two guys kissing in the 50s and his dad calling it love, or his insistence that his “Uncle Bosie” was eaten by cannibals in Papua New Guinea during World War II.
Yet from the 2008 financial crisis to cybersecurity, Schumer has leaned on these imaginary Reagan Democrats — socially moderate, fiscally cautious — to justify Democratic policies. Yet, he admits the Baileys “probably voted for Trump” in 2024, and five out of six times in recent elections.
If your swing voters are MAGA diehards, Chuck, you’re not reading the room — you’re rewriting reality. Oliver’s skit drove the point home with biting humor, portraying the Baileys as hardline conservatives who’d rather take Ivermectin “out of spite” than embrace Schumer’s outreach.

More than a late-night punchline, this is a damning snapshot of a Democratic Party adrift, chasing phantom centrists while real Americans grapple with border chaos, runaway inflation, and bureaucratic bloat.
Schumer’s fantasy voters pull his party rightward, alienating their base without winning over conservatives who value results over rhetoric. Much like how the blue dog Democrats seem to have died out, replaced by socialist Democrats' values and the unwillingness to meet in the middle.
Contrast this with leaders like Florida Governor Ron DeSantis (R), who deliver for real people — cutting red tape, securing communities, and listening to taxpayers, not storybook characters. Schumer’s Baileys may amuse HBO audiences, but they expose a deeper truth: a party so out of touch it invents voters to avoid facing the real ones. Americans deserve better: leaders who tackle skyrocketing costs and government waste with common-sense reforms, not fairy tales.
