NextImg:Eric Schmitt Shatters Democrat Scare Tactics About Weather Alerts Amid Debate on PBS/NPR Funding

As RedState previously reported, hysterical Democrats and their mainstream media allies have predictably ramped up the scare tactics in light of the procedural Senate vote Tuesday night to advance debate to the floor on the Trump-backed rescissions package, which, among other things, will cut federal funding for NPR and PBS.

Not surprisingly, Sen. Minority Leader Chuck Schumer (D-NY), who is still facing calls to be primaried in 2028, was among the loudest. "These cuts to local stations couldn't happen at a worse time, with floods and natural disasters front of mind," Schumer stated during a floor speech. "And sometimes, all too often, public broadcasting is the only way for people to hear what's going on."

"It's a matter of life and death. So why is Donald Trump so hellbent on taking away funding from local stations that can literally save lives?" Schumer went on to ask.

On Wednesday, amid the ongoing Senate debate on whether or not to approve the package, Sen. Eric Schmitt (R-MO) dropped some important facts that Americans need to hear about what defunding NPR and PBS will mean and not mean for critical weather alerts:

Saying that defunding CPB (Corporation for Public Broadcasting) will somehow prevent Americans from receiving emergency alerts is demonstrably not only fearmongering, but not true.

Emergency alerts, the kind you see on your cellphone, and that air on TV and radio stations, are sent out via a system funded and operated by FEMA called the Integrated Public Alert and Warning System or IPAWS. If we rescind CPB's annual funding, IPAWS will continue to operate as usual, sending emergency alerts to cell phones, public broadcasters, and commercial broadcasters alike.

"Simply put," Schmitt said, "We don't need to subsidize left-wing propaganda in order to keep Americans safe."

Here's more from FEMA's IPAWS webpage:

The Integrated Public Alert & Warning System (IPAWS) is FEMA's national system for local alerting that provides authenticated emergency and life-saving information to the public through mobile phones using Wireless Emergency Alerts, to radio and television via the Emergency Alert System, and on the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Weather Radio. Learn more from the IPAWS 101 Fact Sheet.

Once again, the facts do not care about Democrats' feelings.

As RedState's Susie Moore noted, the clock is ticking for everything to happen by the 7/18 deadline, including the Senate's final vote (presumably for approval) and the House conducting its own final vote on the Senate amendments.

We'll keep you posted on the latest developments. Stay tuned.
