Texas Gov. Greg Abbott has taken a lot of incoming verbal fire from The Usual Suspects on the left and in the media ever since he decided to turn the tables on the Biden administration in 2022 and start bussing illegal immigrants to Democrat-run sanctuary cities in order to make a statement about the dire nature of the Biden border crisis.

New York City has been a frequent stop on the Abbott Express Bus over the last two years, so much so that NYC Mayor Eric Adams has taken to repeatedly trashing Abbott as the Big Apple gets a little taste of what Texas border communities do every single day.

But with the crisis hitting a fever pitch in Adamstown, and with angry and frustrated voters giving the Adams administration a piece of their mind, Adams has gotten desperate, so much so that he is now doing what Fox News border crisis reporter Bill Melugin described as a "stunning turnaround" on his previous pro-sanctuary city stance:

After staying tight-lipped on his position for weeks, Mayor Adams came out in favor of modifying the city’s sanctuary status laws late Monday — lending his support to a growing chorus of mostly conservative voices who have called for abolishing the local immigration protections in the wake of several high-profile crimes involving migrants.

In a town hall-style event in Brooklyn on Monday night, Adams said the existing laws are too lax and that he wants to see them changed.

“The overwhelming number of migrants and asylum seekers that are here, they want to work … but those small numbers that are committing crimes, we need to modify the sanctuary city law that if you commit a felony, a violent act, we should be able to turn you over to ICE and have you deported,” Adams said, a remark that drew applause from participants at the town hall held at a public school in Canarsie. “It is a right to live in this city and you should be not committing crimes in our city in doing so. Right now, we don’t have the authority to do so.”

Greg Abbott's original point in beginning the bussing program was not just to draw national attention to the Biden border crisis and to get other cities to share the burden. It was also to have these blue cities and states experience just a fraction of what Texas has to deal with on any given day, so that maybe they'd see the error of their ways and in the process put pressure on Joe Biden to stop the influx.

Some of them have called on Biden to do more, including Illinois Gov. J.B. Pritzker and woke Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson. But in Adams' case (and NY Gov. Kathy Hochul's), they're not saying "Send us more money and resources so we can take in more." They're saying in a nutshell, "Don't come here, but if you do, we're going to try and have the law modified so we can deport you if you commit a serious crime."

That is, as far as Greg Abbott is concerned, the point being made. And Biden's convenient pivot on executive actions he reportedly may take to stem the flow at the southern border seems to further prove the point that Abbott's plan is bearing fruit, even though it shouldn't have taken an election year for these Democrats to (kinda sorta) change their tunes.
