It’s amazing how passionately—and how quickly—leftists often go into full freak-out mode over relatively minor statements or events. (Just look how agonized many are over a simple blue jeans ad that featured an attractive model—you’d think it was an international crisis.)
In their latest hysteria, the Usual Suspects in the corrupt media and the Democrat party are all awhirl over a comment Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent made at a Breitbart News policy event Wednesday regarding Social Security. In a nutshell, he said that the Trump administration’s new child savings accounts provided for in the “One Big Beautiful Bill” could be an effective “back door for privatizing Social Security.”
Cue the hysteria!
It’s almost as if a memo went out from the DNC to the media and the left commanding them to keep saying “the quiet part out loud” over and over again. There were innumerable posts with almost the exact same wording, so naturally, the American Federation of Teachers was among the many who felt they had to jump in (although I’m not sure what any of this has to do with education or teaching):
The only little problem with their little fearmongering narrative? It’s not what he meant, and they know it, as Breitbart explained.
Of course, this was all an intentional misreading of Bessent’s comment. The Trump Accounts are not intended to replace Social Security but to supplement it. They make Social Security less important because they will increase the amount of wealth available for retirees, increasing the economic security of Americans.
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt further pulverized the left’s hot take:
“What the secretary of Treasury was saying, and what this administration believes, is that these Trump newborn accounts — which is an incredibly creative and great provision that was in the One Big Beautiful Bill for newborn children, and families and future generations of Americans — will help supplement, not substitute, Social Security,” Leavitt said during Thursday’s briefing.

Scott Bessent Says It's Time to Review the Federal Reserve: 'I Don't Know What They Do'
Meanwhile, Bessent himself had clarified his statement following the meeting, yet that wasn’t enough to stop leftist howling:
Emphasis mine:
This is not an either-or question: our Administration is committed to protecting Social Security and to making sure seniors have more money.
This is why President Trump’s One Big Beautiful Bill gave tax cuts to those receiving these Social Security benefits — under @POTUS, we are working tirelessly to spread prosperity to all Americans.
Look, I get it. The Democrats are in complete disarray, the media is in a depression, and they’re desperate to find an issue—any issue—to regain any momentum whatsoever and get their base to wake back up. But they’re going to have to do a whole lot better than this, because this time (like so many others), they just look like unhinged hysterics who keep screaming that the sky is falling.
