Linda Yaccarino announced Wednesday that she is stepping down from her role as CEO of Elon Musk’s social media platform X, formerly Twitter, after a two-year stint. She did not give a reason.
Posting to, of course, X, she wrote that it had been an incredible run:
The job was the opportunity of a lifetime, she said:
When @elonmusk and I first spoke of his vision for X, I knew it would be the opportunity of a lifetime to carry out the extraordinary mission of this company. I’m immensely grateful to him for entrusting me with the responsibility of protecting free speech, turning the company around, and transforming X into the Everything App.
I’m incredibly proud of the X team - the historic business turn around we have accomplished together has been nothing short of remarkable.
One can’t help but wonder, if everything was so awesome, why are you leaving?

She talked about the progress made under her tenure.
We started with the critical early work necessary to prioritize the safety of our users—especially children, and to restore advertiser confidence. This team has worked relentlessly from groundbreaking innovations like Community Notes, and, soon, X Money to bringing the most iconic voices and content to the platform. Now, the best is yet to come as X enters a new chapter with @xai
xAI is the artificial intelligence company founded by Elon Musk and is the creator of the AI assistant Grok, which is currently built into X and is free to use, although there are paid versions with more bells and whistles. The two companies became one in 2025, with the AI component valued at more than the X component:
Grok is built by Musk’s company xAI, which merged with X in March in an all-stock transaction that values the AI company at $80 billion and the social media company at $33 billion.
Yaccarino’s departure comes one day after users reported Grok was spitting out antisemitic comments that praised Hitler. The company took the posts down, and it’s unclear if they have anything to do with Yaccarino’s announcement.
She was hired by Musk in May 2023, soon after he’d famously purchased the social media giant for $44 billion, and put her in charge of business operations. He gave a short thank you for her time at the company:
As mentioned, it’s unclear what led to her departure, but it’s also unclear what her next move will be. She’ll still be online though:
I’ll be cheering you all on as you continue to change the world. As always, I’ll see you on ????
It’s been a tumultuous era in Elon-World, and we’ll see over time if there are any major ramifications to the platform or its approximately 611 million monthly active users.
