After months of high-stakes negotiations, Donald Trump’s signature tax and spending legislation, known as the One Big Beautiful Bill (sorry, Chuck—we're still going to call it that), has passed the House by a vote 218-214 and will now head to the president’s desk for him to sign it into law.

After a string of victories in recent weeks in court cases, international deals, and public opinion polls, this is perhaps his most significant win yet.

RedState’s Joe Cunningham had argued that although the bill is imperfect, it was essential for Congress to pass it:

If the OBBB fails and we allow the 2017 tax cuts to expire, the average American family faces a $1,700 tax hike – the equivalent of nine weeks of groceries. For families with children, it's worse: 40 million families will see their Child Tax Credit slashed in half.

For small businesses, the backbone of our economy, we're talking about 26 million small businesses facing a 43.4% top tax rate if the pass-through deduction expires. That's not a policy choice; that's economic sabotage.

The bill permanently extends the 2017 Trump tax cuts and adds critical provisions like no tax on tips, overtime pay, and car loan interest for American-made vehicles. It expands the small business deduction to 23 percent and makes it permanent, potentially creating over a million new Main Street jobs annually.

It’s been a close call throughout, with Vice President JD Vance having to provide the tie-breaker in a previous Senate vote. Earlier Wednesday, meanwhile, the measure barely passed the Rules Committee:

The panel adopted the procedural rule in a 7-6 vote, with two Republicans — Reps. Chip Roy (R-Texas) and Ralph Norman (R-S.C.) — siding with Democrats against the measure, showcasing their opposition to the underlying legislation over deficit concerns.

The procedural vote to approve a necessary amendment offered by North Carolina Rep. Virginia Foxx (R) took over seven hours to complete. The vote to pass the rule, ahead of the final vote on the bill, took nearly six, and lasted into the wee hours of the morning. At one point, there were five Republican no votes on it, but eventually, there was only one, and it passed 219-213 at 3:23 AM Eastern.

At this point, House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) took to the podium to drone on for approximately eight hours and 44 minutes with a speech so boring that it put some of his own party members to sleep. He broke former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA)'s record for the longest speech—eight hours and 32 minutes—on the House floor.

You get the feeling that that was Jeffries' main goal.

Passions have run high as Democrats predicted the end of the world if the legislation passed, while fiscal hawks had grave concerns over the deficit.

Conservatives are upset with the amount of money the bill would add to the deficit, while moderates are concerned about Medicaid cuts and the rollback of green-energy tax credits. The lawmakers prefer the original House bill, which they passed in May, over the Senate bill, which included a number of changes to their initial legislation.

The OBBB is complex and has numerous components concerning taxes, healthcare, the border, and more. We’ll likely be discussing its implications for years. For now, however, this is a signature triumph for Donald Trump and will likely be a defining point in his presidency.

As someone named Barack once said, "Elections have consequences."

Winning!
