On Wednesday afternoon, a shooting occurred at a medical building in Midtown Atlanta, Georgia. At least one person was killed and four others were injured in the shooting. The shooter has not yet been found, but law enforcement is actively searching for the suspect, who police have described as armed and dangerous.
Police have released images of the suspect, who is a black male wearing a gray hoodie, black pants, and brown shoes. The motive for the shooting has not yet been determined. The 24-year-old suspect’s name is Deion Patterson.
The Northside Hospital, located in Midtown Atlanta, confirmed that the shooting took place at their location (at a medical building). They are cooperating with the authorities and have urged people nearby to shelter in place and await instructions from law enforcement.
Multiple fire trucks and deputies from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office were present at the facility, located in a busy area of the city. The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with information about the suspect’s whereabouts has been urged to call 911.
CNN reported:
The shooting occurred after a man became enraged during a trip to the medical facility, according to police. A source told CNN the man was visiting the medical facility with his mother Wednesday.
The man’s mother is currently assisting police, according to the source.
Video footage showed police officers running towards the scene while sirens sounded according to CNN, which also reported that:
Multiple fire trucks, at least one armored police vehicle and deputies from the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office were seen at the scene, which sits in a bustling area of the city, with Google offices, hotels, restaurants and at least two day care centers located nearby.
Democrats have already begun exploiting the shooting to push for stricter gun control measures even though the details of the incident have not yet emerged. Atlanta City Councilman Amir Farokhi released a statement demanding more restrictions on firearms.
“I hope APD apprehends the shooter quickly,” Farokhi said during a conversation with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution. “My heart hurts for those injured and the family of the deceased. Gun violence has become a daily occurrence in our country.”
“We cannot let it become normalized,” he continued. “The time is past due for common sense gun reform. We all deserve to feel safe everywhere.”
