On April 1, I brought you the story of a dinner we would have all loved to be a fly on the wall for. Musician Kid Rock, one of President Donald Trump's biggest supporters, brokered a dinner at the White House between himself, UFC CEO Dana White, Trump, and liberal comedian Bill Maher, one of Trump's harshest critics. A few days later, Kid Rock appeared on the Fox News Channel several times to give some of the dinner details. He said that "it could not have gone better." Now, we are finally hearing Bill Maher's initial thoughts on the evening.

On Sunday, on his "Club Random" podcast, Maher spoke with NewsNation journalist Chris Cuomo and spoke about his dinner with Trump. He initially spoke about Trump's authenticity, saying:
Trump really … is one of the most effective politicians … whatever you think of the policy and him as a person. Just as a politician, just understanding that [you should] always lean in to being more who you are.
Maher appeared to observe, at least a bit, what Trump's supporters have known all along, that Trump—because he has not spent his entire life in government, and is not a politician by trade—is not afraid to go outside the box and say and do things that other politicians would never think of doing. He also said that even though Democrats hate Trump, they need to find someone who has Trump's authenticity and fearlessness. He added:
“You know, he has those moments that no other politician has. And the Democrats have to find that guy,” Maher admitted. “But let’s be real — they’ve been searching for years, and they’re still coming up empty.”
A standout moment of Trump's for Maher was his threatening of Taliban leader Mullah Abdul Ghani Baradar during his first term. The story goes that Trump sent Baradar a picture of his house. Baradar asked, "Why do you send me a picture of my house?" Trump replied, "You'll have to figure that one out." Maher described his reaction to the exchange. Warning: profanity:
“When he did that thing where the guy came in from the Taliban and he said, ‘This is an aerial picture of your house. If during our withdrawal one American is hurt, just know I know where you live. I was like, ‘Oh, can we just play the music now? Because I don’t care it’s Donald Trump and he’s the worst person ever, blah, blah, blah — I f–king love that!’”
Maher admitted that Trump has a relatability to his supporters and that despite his billionaire status, they see him as one of them. He described that by mentioning an instance where Trump was defending his hometown, like we all would.
“One time they were doing something, something was going on and he said, ‘You know what? When you come after New York, you gotta go through me.’ It’s like, oh — hometown boy."

No one expects Maher to come on his show wearing a MAGA hat. But Maher is known for calling out the left as well as the right, and this appeared to be more intellectual honesty from the comedian. There also isn't anyone who thinks that Maher is going to stop ripping Trump for his policies, most of which he disagrees with. But will he maybe go a little bit easier on any personal attacks? Time will tell.
Bill Maher has been a hero to many on the left, joining in on their Trump hatred. So, what kind of reaction to his positive comments on Trump will he get from them? They will no doubt be met with Maher's trademark, to put it politely...indifference. Maher tweeted out that he will reveal more details about the dinner on his show that will air on April 11.
