It's a fine pass we've come to, as a society, when a state legislature has to pass a law to define "man" and "woman." These are things we have instinctively known for thousands upon thousands of years, but now we have to define them in law?
North Carolina's Republican-dominated legislature passed House Bill 805, which, among other things, provides (rather obvious) definitions of "Biological sex," "Boy," "Father," "Girl," "Mother," and "Female." Democratic Governor Josh Stein then vetoed the bill.
The North Carolina legislature has now overridden the governor's veto.
As you see, there's more to this bill than just the definitions; HB 805 also puts in place a section involving online pornography, called "Prevent Sexual Exploitation of Women and Minors."
But as for the definitions, speaking as a biologist, they're pretty much on the mark; well, I could quibble about "biological sex," as sex is a matter of biology and so that term is redundant, but since the voices of reason won this time, we can let that slide:
(1) Biological sex. – The biological indication of male and female in the context of reproductive potential or capacity, such as sex chromosomes, naturally occurring sex hormones, gonads, and nonambiguous internal and external genitalia present at birth, without regard to an individual's psychological, chosen, or subjective experience of gender.
(2) Boy. – A minor human male.
(3) Father. – A male parent.
(4) Female. – A term that when used to refer to a natural person, means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex characterized by a reproductive system with the biological function of producing ova (eggs).
(5) Gender identity. – A term that means an individual's self-declared identity that may not align with biological sex and, being a subjective internal sense, shall not be treated as legally or biologically equivalent to sex.
(6) Girl. – A minor human female.
(7) Male. – A term that when used to refer to a natural person, means a person belonging, at conception, to the sex characterized by a reproductive system with the biological function of producing sperm.
(8) Man. – An adult human male.
(9) Mother. – A female parent.
(10) Woman. – An adult human female."
On the mark, yes. Things we've known for thousands of years, yes. Belaboring the obvious, yes. But this is where we are, at this moment.

Why would Josh Stein veto this bill, which not only recognizes, well, reality, but which also adds protection for women and children who have been exploited online? He's a Democrat, yes. But he's a Democrat who the people of North Carolina, a normally red state, elected as governor. Could we not expect a little more common sense here?
It seems not. The Democrats will keep pushing this nonsense, and they'll keep losing.
