NextImg:Big: Mexico Expelling 26 Cartel Figures to US in Deal With Trump Admin

This is a big deal, and may be the start of bigger, better deals to come. No, I'm not talking about tariffs or trade deals. In this deal, brokered between the Mexican government and the Trump administration, Mexico has agreed to expel 26 notorious cartel figures wanted in the United States. They will be handed over to American authorities to face the music.

These are some very bad people.

Mexico has expelled 26 high-ranking cartel figures to the United States in the latest major deal with the Trump administration as American authorities ratchet up pressure on criminal networks sending drugs across the border, a person familiar with the matter told The Associated Press on Tuesday.

The cartel leaders and other prominent figures were being flown from Mexico to the U.S. on Tuesday, the person said. They spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the operation that was still ongoing.

Those being handed over to U.S. custody include Abigael González Valencia, a leader of “Los Cuinis,” a group closely aligned with notorious cartel Jalisco New Generation or CJNG. Another person, Roberto Salazar, is accused of participating in the 2008 killing of a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy, the person said.

This isn't the first such handoff of goblins, which leads us to the presumption that there will be more.

Mexico’s Attorney General’s Office and Security ministry confirmed the transfers, which were carried out after a promise from the U.S. Justice Department that prosecutors would not seek the death penalty in any of the cases.

It’s the second time in months Mexico has expelled cartel figures accused of narcotics smuggling, murder and other crimes amid mounting pressure from the Trump administration to curb the flow of drugs across the border. In February, Mexico handed over to American authorities 29 cartel figures, including drug lord Rafael Caro Quintero, who was behind the killing of a U.S. DEA agent in 1985.

This is what you might refer to as a "good start." In Mexico, I wouldn't be terribly surprised to see goblins like these somehow sprung from wherever they are being held. Here in the Estados Unidos, that seems a much less likely prospect.

New: Trump Authorizes Military Action Against the Drug Cartels in Major Escalation

During the campaign and since resuming office, President Trump has always maintained the destruction of Latin American drug cartels a priority. We can't go dropping Ginsu missiles on them like we can Islamic terrorist goblins in the Middle East (at least, not yet), but we can and are pursuing them by other means. The President has designated several cartels, including Jalisco New Generation (CJNG). At least one of the cartel members being handed over in this most recent transfer is accused of murdering a U.S. law enforcement officer.

Sadly, a part of the deal is apparently that the United States won't seek the death penalty against these criminals, regardless of their crimes; Mexico apparently takes a more warm and fuzzy approach to drug dealers and murderers than we do. But a lifetime in an American high-security penitentiary is a better end than most of these goblins may have faced otherwise, so in any case, Mexico has nothing to complain about. They get rid of some odious cartel goons, and some American families get to see some justice done.

Sounds like a pretty good deal to me.
