Joe Biden may be gone from the White House, but he's certainly not forgotten. And certainly not by Catholics, who well remember that time his FBI tried to categorize them as Racially or Ethnically Motivated Violent Extremists (RMVEs) for embracing such scandalous things as the Latin Mass, the sanctity of life and some pre-Vatican II traditions. 

It was back in February of 2023—when the supposedly-Catholic Biden still confusedly wandered the halls of 1600 Pennsylvania Avenue and, in theory, oversaw the FBI—that news first surfaced that the FBI's Richmond, Virginia, field office had compiled a report, the now-infamous "Richmond Memo," that attempted to tie traditional Catholics to political extremism. It was the memo author's conclusion that these so-called Radical-Traditionalist Catholics (RTCs) were likely to resort to violence in the run-up to the 2024 presidential election and, therefore, needed to be closely monitored and have their groups infiltrated.

Oh, and much of the FBI's report was based on findings from the Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), the discredited, far-left, and hyper-partisan group that recently designated Turning Point USA, an organization that promotes pro-American ideals on college campuses, as a "hate group." That the FBI would rely on the rancid conclusions of the SPLC is very worrying, indeed. Were they also getting crime data from Black Lives Matter?

Christopher Wray's FBI: First They Came for the Catholics

Luckily, Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-IA), who chairs the Senate Judiciary Committee, also hasn't forgotten this worrisome attack on Catholics, and on Tuesday released additional FBI documents that call into question how deeply-rooted the anti-Catholic bias was in the FBI and the role former FBI Director Christopher Wray played in covering it up.

In a letter to FBI Director Kash Patel, Grassley highlights two troubling issues laid bare by these new documents:

1. The FBI's over-reliance on the questionable findings of the SPLC, something that was even flagged by an FBI official who provided feedback on the memo and questioned the SPLC's "hate designation" of Catholics.

2. Christopher Wray's role in covering up the fact that this anti-Catholic sentiment was not confined to merely one person at one office, but that the findings included the feedback of over 1,000 FBI employees nationwide and spanned across multiple field offices. When Wray appeared before Congress on July 12, 2023, he brushed off the Richmond Memo as a "single product by a single office," but this is demonstrably false, as the new document dump by Grassley shows.

Grassley summed up his findings this way:

Per the Grassley-obtained records, the Biden FBI's targeting of Catholics based on biased sources was more widespread than previously known. In fact, Grassley found the FBI produced at least 13 additional documents and five attachments that used anti-Catholic terminology and relied on information from the radical far-left Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC). One FBI agent admitted over email, “[O]ur overreliance on the SPLC for hate designation [of traditional Catholics] is ... problematic.”  

A second FBI memo, released by Grassley, was drafted by the FBI Richmond field office for Bureau-wide distribution. The draft memo repeated the unfounded link between traditional Catholicism and violent extremism, but was never published due to backlash following the Richmond Memo’s public disclosure. The existence of this second memo contradicts former-FBI Director Christopher Wray’s testimony that the Richmond field office only produced “a single product.

The senator went on to request that Patel continue to help uncover the true extent to which Christopher Wray and the Biden FBI went to cover up their insidious attack on practicing Catholics using faulty and, let's face it, extremist "reporting" by the SPLC. Patel has yet to respond publicly to Grassley's letter, but it would be reassuring to know, at the very least, that any FBI investigative methodologies that involve the Southern Poverty Law Center have been put down, in the words of Donald Trump, "like a dog." 

As for holding Wray accountable for his lies, well, let's just add him to the growing list of Biden players who still await their comeuppance.
