Is this resistance or treachery?
Over the weekend on (of course) MSNBC, Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson announced that Chicago, under his charge, will continue its "sanctuary" policies, and will continue to resist any effort by the federal government to enforce the law. When did enforcing the law become undesirable to anyone other than a criminal?
The mayor said:
Let me first just acknowledge the level of anxiety and fear and trepidation that this administration has caused. You've never seen a society improve or expand under this type of fear. And we're going to continue to resist, we're going to do it in many different ways, whether it's taking to the streets or to the courts, or policy. One of the things I'm very proud of is that we are a welcoming city. Which means our local law enforcement do not dub or behave as federal ICE agents. And so our local law enforcement, as we continue to rebuild and expand trust amongst all of our residents, it's important that we hold that line.
Let's unpack that statement.
First of all, there's no "anxiety, fear, or trepidation" among anyone in the country legally, except for the nitwits and low-information types who buy into the blatherings of hack leftist politicians. But it's the "resist" part that's troublesome. The mayor, speaking on behalf of the city of Chicago, is promising to resist the federal government in the performance of its constitutional duties. Mayor Johnson has never read the Constitution, has no idea what the Supremacy Clause is, and has no intention of finding out.
Here's the question: Has the city of Chicago's mayor just pronounced that this city, one of America's major cities, is in rebellion against the government of the United States? If so, what action should the United States take?

The Mayor of Chicago has, in this statement, not just pronounced that the city's law enforcement won't aid and assist ICE or other federal immigration authorities. That would be one thing. But he has also given support, speaking as the mayor, as the elected representative of the voters of the city of Chicago, to "take it to the streets." This isn't a Doobie Brothers song, Mr. Mayor; this is inciting rebellion.
Oh, Mayor Johnson would, for certain, piously proclaim that he means only peaceful protests, which are protected by the First Amendment. He may even believe that. But the recent history of these "taking it to the streets" activities has been anything but. What we've seen in Los Angeles and other cities is nothing more than rebellion against the legal, constitutional authority of the United States.
And Mayor Johnson is encouraging it.
The people of Chicago would do well with some better leadership. But I'm skeptical as to the odds of that ever happening. With the last two choices for mayor, the Chicago voters elected to toss themselves from the frying pan into the fire. But they voted, and now they are getting the government they wanted, good and hard.
