NextImg:Alec & Stephen Baldwin vs. Tree, Results: Tree 1, Baldwins 0

On top of all the monumental events of this Monday, with all the cause to celebrate a major peace deal in the Middle East, we should not be surprised to learn that not everyone has been having a good day. That's to be expected, I suppose. Law of averages, and all that, you know.

Two people in particular are having a bad day: Actor Alec Baldwin and his brother Stephen, who crashed their Range Rover into a tree in New York. It's not clear which of the Baldwins was driving. The Range Rover looks to be a total loss.

Good point. At least nobody got shot this time. We should be grateful for small favors.

Fox News has more details, although we admit, information is still a bit sketchy.

Actor Alec Baldwin and his brother Stephen Baldwin were involved in a car crash in the Hamptons, New York, on Monday, reportedly hitting a tree head-on.

TMZ first reported that the Baldwins’ Range Rover struck a tree, and photos it obtained show the SUV's front end completely destroyed.

It was not immediately clear who was driving at the time of the crash.

One photo showed a nearby garbage truck. TMZ said it contacted the company, which claimed its driver was not at fault.

As you might expect, I have a few questions.

First: How do you just hit a tree, especially one that size? The tree in the photo is, honestly, a pretty big tree. It's not like one can just miss seeing it. Trees don't lie in ambush, just waiting for a couple of Baldwins to pass by in a Range Rover. The obvious conclusion is that whichever Baldwin was driving was driving far too fast for conditions.

Second: Speaking of which, was it Alec or Stephen who was driving? Did the driver Baldwin take a breathalyzer test? Was there any sign of impairment? Any more than usual, at any rate?

Third and finally: Were they cited for anything? I'm pretty sure that most people, anywhere in the country, who just slammed into a tree and totaled their car, would at least get a ticket to go along with the nasty letter from their insurance company.

We will await more details with breath that is approaching bated.

I'm reminded of the story of a young woman who was pulled over for driving erratically, for swerving from one side of the road to the other. When the police officer approached, there was no sign or smell of alcohol, and the young woman seemed bright and alert, so he asked her what was up. "I saw this big tree in the middle of the road," she said. "So I swerved around it, then there was another tree, and when I swerved around that one, there was another tree, right in the road!"

The police officer looked into her car. "Ma'am," he said, "That's your air freshener."

I'll be here all week.
