If you’re an Alaskan, a conservative, and follow conservative media, you probably know who Suzanne Downing is. She founded and, for years, ran the website for Must Read Alaska, the Great Land’s best local conservative news outlet. I mentioned her work here at RedState many times; Suzanne is a great reporter and a great writer.
Now she’s left Must Read Alaska.
Our Board of Directors is saddened to announce the sudden resignation of our esteemed editor, Suzanne Downing, as she embarks on a new journey.

In other news: Not long ago, Anchorage residents were able to attend the 7th Annual Great Alaska Duck Race. Yes, really.
It was a sight to behold: thousands of rubber ducks floating down Ship Creek in the name of raising funds for nonprofits around Alaska. The fake waterfowl making their way down the stream is part of the annual Great Alaska Duck Race.
”This our 7th annual Great Alaska Duck Race. This is a fundraiser and a very fun, family-friendly event,” Great Alaska Duck Race official, Kelsey Lellig said.
Some of the nonprofits benefitting this year are Alaska Excel, Anchorage Hockey Association, Habitat for Humanity, Alaska Zoo, Covenant House, Alaska Backcountry Hunters & Anglers and American Lung Association Alaska, Lellig said. Those aren’t the only winners, though; members of the community have a chance to win a cash prize as well.
”I love seeing the faces of the folks who win, that’s so exciting. Last year, we had the winner here at the race, and she bought her ticket here,” Lellig said
Here, watch:
Alaska Man score: 5 rubber ducks. Some fun and fundraising for some worthy causes. Win-win.

And finally, this is a real Alaska thing; a light plane landed on the Seward Highway. They didn’t hit any cars or trucks, and nobody was hurt. So that’s good.
A Rans S-21 Outbound aircraft landed at Mile 93 of the Seward Highway Tuesday morning, according to Girdwood Fire Chief Michelle Weston.
The Girdwood Fire Department responded to the incident after they received reports about it around 8:30 a.m. Weston said. The area the plane landed in was between Girdwood and Bird Point.
Two people were on board but there were no deaths or injuries, Weston said.
The incident did not result in the closure of the highway and the plane did not hit any traffic, according to Weston. It taxied on the shoulder and as of 11 a.m., was reported to have taken off.
It’s unclear why they landed. Mechanical problems? Well, they took off again. Dropping passengers? I’m familiar with that stretch of highway. On one side, there’s a rock bluff. On the other, well, when the tide is in, there’s water; when it’s out, there’s an oozy mud flat. I’m not sure what happened here, but I’ll keep an eye on it.
Alaska Man score: Withholding judgment until we know more.
Now, let’s talk about lakes. Oh, and phone books. No, I’m not kidding.
