You remember Merrick Garland’s infamous 2021 memo, where the former Biden-era attorney general labeled parents who had questions about what their kids were being taught at schools “terrorist threats.”
Trump’s Attorney General Pam Bondi wants no part of that tyrannical use of the DOJ’s vast power, and on Wednesday, she issued a memo to social media that she will simply not tolerate the government harassing parents who just want a say in what happens to their children:
She put every U.S. attorney on notice that the First Amendment forbids the kind of action undertaken during the corrupt Garland years:
"The First Amendment guarantees the right of every citizen to speak freely, assemble peaceably, and petition the government for redress of grievances, including at public school board meetings," she wrote in a memo to all 93 U.S. Attorneys. "These rights do not yield to political trends or bureaucratic convenience. While schools must maintain order, such authority cannot be used as a pretext to silence dissent or punish parents for expressing their views."
As I wrote in 2023, Biden’s DOJ under Garland went out of its way to target American parents instead of focusing on actual terrorists and criminals:
The [House Judiciary] committee began its investigation in October 2021 after members learned of the issuance “of a memorandum from Attorney General Merrick Garland directing the Federal Bureau of Investigation and all U.S. Attorney’s Offices—among other Department components—to examine and address threats posed by parents at school board meetings.”
The FBI went on to routinely investigate parents who criticized school boards, including a father for simply opposing mask mandates and a mom deemed a threat for “owning guns” and belonging to a conservative parent group called “Moms for Liberty.”
Bondi said, No more:
Bondi said that in recent years school officials and others "have ignored, dismissed, or even retaliated against concerned parents." She specifically mentioned "gender and racial ideology."
"Parents have a fundamental right to direct the moral and religious education of their children," she wrote in the memo. "Schools receiving public funds must ensure compliance with applicable federal protections, including mechanisms for parents to exempt their children from instruction that conflicts with the family's sincerely held religious beliefs, such as content related to sexuality and gender ideology."
Joe Biden may be long gone from the White House, but his tainted shadow remains. This move by Bondi is yet another example of the Trump administration removing his disastrous legacy, one brick at a time.
