ABC News has been blasted for the shocking label it initially gave to Hamas hostages when it wrote that they were "detainees," with people calling on the outlet to apologize for the disgusting comment.
In a report on Tuesday from ABC News titled "Where things stand as Trump presses Netanyahu for Gaza ceasefire: ANALYSIS." The report included a paragraph that read:
The deal on the table would see ten living hostages -- about half of the total amount of detainees believed to still be alive in Gaza -- and the remains of 18 more returned to Israel in five separate releases in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire, the release of some Palestinian prisoners, and a surge of humanitarian aid for Palestinians in the enclave.
Many people saw the piece and reacted to the disrespectful comments about the people who were taken hostage in the deadly October 7 terrorist attack on Israelis.
Fox News Joe Concha wrote, "MSABC News just casually calling Israeli hostages ‘detainees' is about as insulting as it gets."
John Ondrasik of the music group "Five for Fighting" added, "One could be infuriated that @ABC news referred to the hostages as 'detainees' until one remembers they call themselves 'journalists.'"
A third person wrote, "Hey @ABC, They aren't 'detainees,' they are hostages who were stolen from their homes and a music festival. 'Captives' would have worked. Your bias is showing."
While a fourth added, "Disgusting. ABC News describes as 'detainees' the Israelis who were kidnapped into Gaza as Hamas massacred their families. For 641 days, they've been starved and tortured while Hamas demands murderers for their release. @ABC — Fix this appalling distortion and apologize."
After screenshots of the ABC news report surfaced all across X, the news outlet edited the paragraph. It now read:
The deal on the table would see ten living hostages -- about half of the total number believed to still be alive in Gaza -- and the remains of 18 more returned to Israel in five separate releases in exchange for a 60-day ceasefire, the release of some Palestinian prisoners, and a surge of humanitarian aid for Palestinians in the enclave.
An editor's note at the bottom of the piece also appears to address the comment, but not completely.
Editor's note: This story has been updated to refer in one instance to those held by Hamas as hostages.
There has yet to be an apology at the time of this publication or a response to RedState from the news organization about the initial report.
As RedState's Brad Slager has reported, there has been more than one example of malfeasance by legacy media outlets when it comes to reporting on Hamas.
