NextImg:The Tesla 'Recall' That Wasn't

On Wednesday, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) issued a recall notice for Tesla vehicles with Full Self Driving (FSD) technology.

Per CNBC:

Tesla is voluntarily recalling 362,758 vehicles equipped with the company’s experimental driver-assistance software, which is marketed as Full Self-Driving Beta or FSD Beta, in the US, according to a recall notice out Thursday. Tesla will deliver an over-the-air software update to cars to address the issues, the recall notice said.

The FSD Beta system may cause crashes by allowing the affected vehicles to: “Act unsafe around intersections, such as traveling straight through an intersection while in a turn-only lane, entering a stop sign-controlled intersection without coming to a complete stop, or proceeding into an intersection during a steady yellow traffic signal without due caution,” according to a safety recall report on the website of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The FSD Beta system may also have trouble responding appropriately “to changes in posted speed limits,” the notice said.

However, following news of the NHTSA notice, Tesla CEO Elon Musk pushed back on the characterization of it as a recall, noting, “The word ‘recall’ for an over-the-air software update is anachronistic and just flat wrong!”

Per the NHTSA website:

Initiated safety recalls require a manufacturer’s action to announce and remedy the defects.

A recall is issued when a manufacturer or NHTSA determines that a vehicle, equipment, car seat, or tire creates an unreasonable safety risk or fails to meet minimum safety standards. Most decisions to conduct a recall and remedy a safety defect are made voluntarily by manufacturers prior to any involvement by NHTSA.

Manufacturers are required to fix the problem by repairing it, replacing it, offering a refund, or in rare cases repurchasing the vehicle.

So…tomayto — tomahto; recall — update. Either way, if you have one of the affected models, make sure you check for and install the latest update. And don’t expect your vehicle to drive itself!
