The White House has nominated Gen. Eric Smith to be the Marine Corp’s top officer, according to a Senate notice.

If confirmed, Smith would replace Gen. David Berger as commandant of the Marine Corps.

Smith is currently the Marine Corps’ No. 2 officer. The nomination has yet to be announced by the service, but his package has been received by the Senate, according to the chamber’s web site.

The move comes amid a larger shakeup within the Joint Chiefs of Staff, as several officers face the end of their terms.

On Thursday, President Joe Biden nominated the Air Force’s top officer, Gen. C.Q. Brown, to be the next Joint Chiefs chair. If confirmed, he would replace Gen. Mark Milley.

The move means the White House now must choose a new Air Force chief of staff.

Last month, Gen. Randy George, the Army’s vice chief of staff, was tapped to replace Gen. James McConville as the Army’s top officer. Chief of Naval Operations Adm. Mike Gilday is also facing the end of his term. His successor has not yet been nominated.
