MSNBC host Mehdi Hasan announced Sunday night that he is leaving the network “to look for a new challenge.”

Hasan’s departure comes after it was announced in November that MSNBC was canceling his show amid a broader reshuffling of the network’s weekend programming lineup, drawing backlash from progressive lawmakers and activists.

“Yes, I’ve decided to leave,” Hasan said at the end of his final show. “To be clear, I am so proud. So, so proud of what we’ve achieved on this show, on this network. And I can’t thank you enough for tuning in and for your support and for your feedback. But as I say, New Year, new plans.”

MSNBC confirmed Hasan’s departure in a statement to POLITICO.

In a November email announcing the shakeup, which also included the announcement of a new morning show, MSNBC President Rashida Jones told staff that the network has the “opportunity to build on our accomplishments and keep the momentum going into 2024 and beyond.” She did not provide specifics on why the show was being canceled, and said Hasan would remain as a fill-in host and commentator when his show went off the air.

Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) posted to X in November that it was “bad optics” for MSNBC to end the show “at a time when he is vocal for human rights in Gaza with the war ongoing.”

Hasan started his show on Peacock in October 2020, and it moved to MSNBC in March 2021. He previously worked for Al Jazeera English and hosted a podcast for The Intercept.

Hasan on Sunday called his time at MSNBC “a privilege.”

“It’s been an absolute blast doing this live show on MSNBC for the past three years with an amazing team of producers behind me,” Hasan said.
