The union representing film and television actors will vote Thursday on whether to join screenwriters in their monthslong strike on studio productions.

The Screen Actors Guild — American Federation of Television and Radio Artists — announced that its Wednesday night deadline for negotiations had passed without reaching a contract agreement with the Alliance of Motion Picture and Television Producers, setting the stage for a guild vote on beginning a formal picket.

“The AMPTP has refused to acknowledge that enormous shifts in the industry and economy have had a detrimental impact on those who perform labor for the studios,” guild president Fran Drescher and chief negotiator Duncan Crabtree-Ireland wrote in a Thursday statement. “Though we’ve engaged in negotiations in good faith and remained eager to reach a deal that sufficiently addressed performer concerns, the AMPTP’s responses to our proposals have not been adequate.”

The AMPTP, which represents major studios and steamers including Amazon, Netflix and NBCUniversal, expressed their disappointment with the conclusion of the negotiation process, writing in a statement that “this was the Union’s choice, not ours.”

“Rather than continuing to negotiate, SAG-AFTRA has put us on a course that will deepen the financial hardship for thousands who depend on the industry for their livelihood,” the AMPTP wrote.

Negotiations on the contract began June 7, with a 98 percent vote on strike authorization by union members. The guild has requested increased compensation and benefits for its members, as well as higher residual payments, terms over artificial intelligence usage and regulation regarding self-taped auditions.

If SAG-AFTRA initiates a strike, it will join the Writers’ Guild of America on the picket lines. The WGA has been on strike since early May with no end in sight.

A SAG-AFTRA strike would mark the first time since 1960 that actors and writers have launched a joint strike on Hollywood producers. The industry-wide work stoppage would shut down production of films and television shows across the country.

“Our ninety-year history is a testament to what can be achieved through our conviction and unity,” Dresher and Crabtree-Ireland wrote in their statement. “For the future of our profession, we stand together.”
