Embattled Rep. George Santos had what appeared to be a tense exchange with Sen. Mitt Romney as members of both houses of Congress filed into their seats for President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech Tuesday.
Santos — a New York Republican whose short tenure in the House has been underscored by revelations that he fabricated much of his resume, and may have lied or misled election officials in his campaign’s financial filings — secured a prime seat in the House chamber on Tuesday night, putting him in position to rub elbows with fellow legislators as they arrived.
But Romney (R-Utah) did not seem happy to see Santos as he walked down the aisle. In a video captured by CNN, Romney and Santos appear to have a tense exchange as the senator makes his way to his seat. Earlier in the night, Vice President Kamala Harris seemed to turn around when she saw Santos as she walked to the front, according to the Daily Beast.
Santos is facing calls from all sides to resign over his rapidly multiplying scandals. The freshman congressman recently recused himself from his committee assignments amid investigations into his finances.
