Jason Chaffetz, a Fox News contributor present at Charlie Kirk’s heartbreaking assassination on Wednesday, described the scene and his own personal friendship with Kirk.
Chaffetz had brought his entire family to the event at Utah Valley University (UVU) and had texted Kirk to ask if their families could get together. Panting, emotional, and shocked, Chaffetz explained how the tragedy unfolded. Kirk had not yet been confirmed dead at the time Chaffetz spoke, but Donald Trump has since issued a statement on Kirk’s passing and praised the TPUSA founder, who did so much to bring young people into the conservative movement.
“I was there. My daughter was there, my son in law's there, my wife was there. I mean, Charlie Kirk coming to town. It's — we were excited, and people were there. And there were lots of them,” Chaffetz began with tears in his voice. “And, you know, he — he came out, he was throwing hats, riling up the crowd. He took his first question, which was,” here Chaffetz had to pause to catch his breath, “a religious question, and then he got to the second question, which is about 30 minutes into his presentation.”
So at around 2:30 p.m. Mountain, by Chaffetz’s estimate, Charlie took a question “about transgender shooters — mass killings, versus people that weren't transgender. And when that happened, when that question came out, and he was going to have the interaction, one shot rang out.
The shooter appears to have been a trained sniper, given that he was able to shoot Kirk fatally in the neck with just a single shot from a building about 200 yards away. “I was watching Charlie,” Chaffetz recalled, “I can't say that I saw blood. I can't say that I saw him get hit, but I did see him fall immediately backwards into his left.”
This particularly hit home for Chaffetz because he had just been forming plans with Kirk to meet up and have a fun family get-together. “I traded text messages with him … ahead of time. And I said, ‘Hey, Charlie, I hope to get a chance to see you. Our family would like to see you again’ — and — and and we still want to see him again.” Sadly, that cannot happen now.
Chaffetz continued, “So he said he's going to go for a few hours, and, you know, maybe we could see him afterwards. But, gosh, it's just — he's there doing the right thing, you know. And it's so great to see all these 20-year-olds enthusiastic about politics in the world and to have an open dialogue.” Unfortunately, too many people in America today do not want to have an open dialogue, including the shooter.
By Chaffetz’s estimate, some 2,000 people were at the event. Chaffetz couldn’t help returning to the bitter irony of the fact that Kirk was shot while discussing the issue of radicalized transgender shooters. “But as soon as the shot rang out, everybody hit the deck, and then everybody started scattering and yelling and screaming, as you might imagine,” Chaffetz said. “And, you know, I went from watching Charlie Kirk to looking over to — you know, make sure our daughter and our son-in-law were okay, and everybody just was in disbelief and just scattered.” Utah Valley University is the biggest university in the state, with over 40,000 students, Chaffetz stated, “So there's what's called the quad in the middle, and anybody can come in and out.” He later said, “I’m so mad” at the “total, complete evil,” but lauded Kirk’s faith in Christ.

We are seemingly returning to the era of American history when organized Democrat terrorism kept entire states in constant fear, and when Democrats’ political opponents were regularly raped, assaulted, and even assassinated by domestic terrorists. We do not know who the shooter is, but we do know that multiple leftist outlets started bashing Kirk as soon as he was shot, still fueling the hatred against conservatives that has too often resulted in violence. If we do not learn from the tragedy of history and exercise justice evenly, without any regard for title, race, or office, we can unfortunately look forward to more tragedies.
God bless Charlie Kirk and his family. He died fighting for what he believed in and trying to restore American greatness. He leaves an admirable legacy behind him.
