President Donald Trump has removed former U.S. Rep. Billy Long from his position as IRS commissioner.
A White House official said Friday that Long has been ousted just less than two months after his Senate confirmation.
The official, who was not authorized to speak publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity, did not provide a reason for the dismissal.
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent will take over as acting commissioner, the official said.
Long was confirmed by the Senate in a 53-44 vote, despite Democrat concerns over his prior work for a company that promoted a fraudulent coronavirus pandemic-era tax break and campaign contributions he received following Trump’s nomination.
During his time in Congress, from 2011 to 2023, Long sponsored legislation to abolish the IRS.
