Representative Ilhan Omar has been confronted about her comments following the assassination of Charlie Kirk, where she said that she believes “he was a reprehensible, hateful man.”

In a Friday appearance on “The Source,” CNN anchor Kaitlan Collins questioned Omar (D-Minn.) about her previous comments.

Collins replayed a clip of a discussion Omar had with progressive commentator Mehdi Hasan, which was livestreamed on YouTube the day after Kirk’s shocking assassination. In the clip, Omar accused Kirk of downplaying George Floyd’s death and slavery, and called conservatives “full of s***.”

Representative Nancy Mace (R-S.C.) moved to censure Omar and have her removed from both the House Budget Committee and the House Education and Workforce Committee, citing the livestreamed interview. The resolution was shelved, however, in a 214-213 roll call.

“It’s really gross, very disappointing,” Mace said after the vote.

When asked about Mace, Omar said, “I hope she does get the help she needs.”

On Friday, President Donald Trump said to reporters who asked about Omar’s comments, “I think she’s terrible,” and suggested impeachment.

Collins asked Omar on Friday if she still stood by what she initially said about Kirk.

“Yeah, I do believe it is important for us to hold a mirror,” Omar responded. “There are so many people who are pretending the words that Charlie said don’t exist.”

The congresswoman went on to falsely accuse Kirk of saying that black women don’t have the “thought-processing power to get ourselves into college.”

“He had hate for so many people,” she said of Kirk.

Collins asked Omar if she believed the timing of her comments was appropriate, being aired 24 hours after his death.

“Do you think that Charlie regretted mocking George Floyd’s death?” Omar shot back. “I think saying what Charlie did and who he was has nothing to do with his assassination, has nothing to do with the timing of his assassination, it is a matter of record.”

Omar’s accusations regarding Floyd referenced a remark made by Kirk at a Turning Point USA event at Minnesota State University in 2021.

“I’m not going to go on this endless soap box defending Derek Chauvin. I think he’s kind of not a great person. But I am also going to offer some context and some nuance about the death of George Floyd that no one dares to say out loud, which is that this guy was a scumbag,” Kirk stated. “Now, does that mean that he deserves to die? That’s two totally different things. Of course not.”

Kirk referenced Floyd’s crimes, such as robbing a pregnant woman at gunpoint, and told his audience that the Hennepin County examiner who performed Floyd’s autopsy found that Floyd did not die of asphyxiation, but of “cardiopulmonary arrest,” linked to extremely high levels of fentanyl and methamphetamine.

Collins pushed back again, referencing former President Barack Obama’s response to Kirk’s shooting that said, “we have to extend grace to people during their period of mourning and shock.” She asked her guest, “Does he have a point?”

“I extend grace to his wife and kids. I cannot imagine what they are going through. But the reality is that his wife sat by him as he said those things, and did not tell him that these are human beings who you are calling garbage,” Omar answered.

Omar claimed that people are getting fired for “sharing his words,” and said that she did not see people celebrating Kirk’s murder.

Collins moved on to a video that Omar reshared a TikTok video to X, in which a man said, “Kirk was Dr. Frankenstein and his monster shot him through the neck.”

“Why repost that video?” Collins asked.

“Because there are a lot of things in the video that I did agree with,” Omar answered. “Obviously we share videos; we don’t have to agree with every single word. But I do believe he was a reprehensible, hateful man.”

Omar then addressed the CNN anchor directly, asking, “Do you think I don’t have the brain processing power like you or a white man?”

She continued after some back-and-forth, “I am not going to sit here and be judged for not wanting to honor any legacy this man has left behind. That should be in the dustbin of history and we should hopefully move on and forget the hate that he spewed every single day.”
