Wordle 663 4/6

⬜????⬜⬜⬜ PRIME
????⬜????⬜⬜ ROCKY
????⬜???????????? CHART
???????????????????? CARAT

My Wordle group consists of my brother, Steve; his wife, Meg; and my girlfriend, Meghan, who doesn’t play but is subjected, whether she likes it or not, to our daily drama, which is a haven for passive-aggressive behavior. “Hmm …” is a typical response when someone does well. Translation: You clearly cheated. Who makes FLORA their second guess? (And this is worth emphasizing: You can’t tell me that my brother and sister-in-law aren’t in cahoots. It’s so obvious, Steve!)

The good news is that there are moments when the game unites us as a family thanks to our collective suffering. A batch of fives and sixes simply means that it was a stupid word in the first place. But more often than not, someone wins. And that someone usually isn’t me.

It pains me to admit that I’m not terrific at Wordle. Yes, I play every day — I’ve completed 394 puzzles and counting — but don’t confuse experience with expertise. The bulk of my scores are made up of fours (143), fives (105) and sixes (31). I’m like a .250 hitter in baseball. I’m the Spike Owen of Wordle.

My starting word depends on my morning. If I’m feeling good, I’ll go with PRIME. But if I play before having coffee, it’s CRIME. Today, I go with PRIME, which results in one measly yellow square. On the bright side, I eliminate two vowels — I and E — and I still have a chance to pull off a two. But my second guess, ROCKY, suggests only marginal improvement, so I try to rectify my morning by running to the kitchen for a second cup of coffee. Guess No. 3: CHART. OK, progress. A couple of greens. Wait, could the word be CARAT? Is that how you spell it? I always thought it was KARAT, with a K. But I’ve already eliminated K, thanks to ROCKY.

Sure enough, it’s CARAT, and I add another mediocre score to my lifetime average. I rate this Wordle two out of five stars because I know that my sister-in-law is about to beat me.

Today’s word is CARAT. It’s a noun. According to Webster’s New World College Dictionary, it’s a unit of weight for precious metals.

Today’s Statistics

Today’s word is moderately challenging because of the unfamiliarity of its letter pattern.

The letter pattern is unique enough that the answer can usually be found using elimination strategies within six guesses, but the word has duplicated letters, making it tricky.
