Two subway trains collided near West 96th Street in Manhattan on Thursday afternoon, causing one of them to derail, the authorities said.
Eight people aboard a northbound 1 train were injured when it collided with a work train around 3 p.m., according to officials and an internal police report about the collision. The injuries were not considered life-threatening, but those passengers were taken to hospitals, the report said.
The work train was switching tracks when it was struck by the passenger train, causing it to derail, the report added. It was not immediately clear why the trains collided.
The Metropolitan Transportation Authority confirmed in a social media post that a train had derailed near 96th Street and Broadway, and that service would be suspended “while emergency teams assist passengers.”
