NextImg:Scenes From Across an America Bracing Itself Against Brutal Winter Cold

For many Americans, the recent winter weather has been relentless.

The brutal cold — with temperatures plunging far below normal for January and bringing potentially dangerous conditions when combined with wind — will continue to plague much of the United States over the next week.

In addition to the bitter blast, parts of the Mid-Atlantic and the Northeast continue to dig out from the weekend snowfall which brought some of the largest accumulations of the season, including 16 inches in parts of West Virginia.

And starting on Monday night, a rare winter storm will threaten the Gulf Coast states and the Southeast with up to 10 inches of accumulation possible in areas not accustomed to snowfall.

But the bleak forecast didn’t stop many Americans from leaving their homes over the holiday weekend. Here are scenes from across a country bracing itself against the cold.
