There was big engagement news that Sam Block wanted to discuss on the internet on Tuesday, the day when Taylor Swift and Travis Kelce suddenly announced that they were to be wed.
But Mr. Block, an associate producer at ESPN, wasn’t talking about their news. He was talking about himself and his fiancée, Anna Gomez.
“This feels like the perfect time,” he quipped in a social media post on X, “to announce that I am officially engaged to the love of my life.”
He added: “I assume this will be the only major engagement news of the day.”
Of course, when it came to getting the wider public’s attention, Mr. Block stood little chance. News that one of the most famous couples in the world — he of football fame and she of music stardom — had gotten secretly engaged dominated online forums, with fans discussing everything from close-ups of her ring to speculation over when the proposal had taken place.
Ms. Swift and Mr. Kelce were not the only couple, celebrity or otherwise, to announce their engagement on Tuesday. Prince Jackson, the eldest son of Michael Jackson, announced his engagement on Instagram to his girlfriend, Molly Schirmang. But most eyes — at least in the realms of sports, music and celebrity news — were on the photos of Mr. Kelce and Ms. Swift embracing, surrounded by floral-themed decorations, and of the ring, which appeared to be a large old-mine cut diamond set on an engraved band.
