Parts of the Northeast were under excessive heat advisories as hot and humid conditions could make temperatures feel more like 100 degrees through midweek, in the latest round of scorching heat to bake the region, forecasters said.
The heat advisories in New York City began on Sunday, when the temperature in Central Park reached 92 degrees Fahrenheit, and are in effect through 10 p.m. on Tuesday. The advisories were expected to expand on Monday to most of the New York City region, including parts of New Jersey and Connecticut, according to the National Weather Service office for New York.
“The heat and humidity will continue through Tuesday, and likely continue into Wednesday,” the office said. “It will remain quite uncomfortable with heat indexes exceeding 100 in places,’’ through Wednesday, the office added. The heat index is a measure of how the temperature feels with humidity.
The previous high temperature for the New York region this season was 97 degrees, recorded on June 21 at La Guardia Airport.
The area has endured high temperatures and humidity for much of July. The humidity levels this week are expected to be slightly lower than they were during a heat wave last week, but temperatures will be hotter, forecasters said.
