The authorities detained Miami Dolphins wide receiver Tyreek Hill outside Hard Rock Stadium in Miami-Dade County on Sunday shortly before the Dolphins’ season-opening game, the team said in a statement.

Hill, 30, was pulled over for a traffic incident about one block from the stadium, briefly detained by the police, and then released, the Dolphins said. He later suited up for Sunday afternoon’s game between the Dolphins and the Jacksonville Jaguars and scored a touchdown.

One video posted on social media appears to show Hill being placed on the ground by officers and being handcuffed.

It was not immediately clear what led to Hill’s detention. In its statement, the Dolphins organization said that “several teammates saw the incident and stopped to offer support.”

Stephanie V. Daniels, director of the Miami-Dade Police Department, said in a statement on Sunday that Hill had been detained by officers with her department and that she had requested a review of “all details surrounding the incident,” including available body-camera footage. She did not elaborate.

Later on Sunday afternoon, she said that one of the officers involved in Hill’s detention “was placed on administrative duties while the investigation is being conducted.”

After the Dolphins beat the Jaguars on Sunday, when asked about the incident with police, Hill told reporters he was “still trying to put it all together.”

He said officers told him he was speeding, adding that he “wasn’t disrespectful” and did not know why he was placed in handcuffs.

“It happened so fast that it caught me off guard,” he said.

He also said he wanted to use his platform “to figure out a way to flip this and make it a positive on both ends, on my end and Miami Dade.”

The wide receiver has been one of the most productive players in the N.F.L. since entering the league in 2016 with Kansas City. He was traded to Miami in 2022. Last year, he led the league in receiving yards (1,799) and receiving touchdowns (13).

In Sunday’s game against Jacksonville, he made seven receptions for 130 yards and scored an 80-yard touchdown, the longest of his career, according to ESPN. After the touchdown, he put his hands behind his back as if wearing handcuffs.

“It was a planned celebration,” he said after the game. “We had something else, but then this happened.”
