A man shot two Pennsylvania state troopers who were responding to a report about an injured person at a home late Thursday morning, setting off a manhunt that ended with the police killing the suspect, the authorities said.
Both of the troopers who were shot were undergoing surgery at a hospital early Thursday afternoon, said Trooper First Class Robert M. Urban, a spokesman for the Pennsylvania State Police. He did not elaborate on their conditions and added that the police were still working to piece together what had happened on the call.
Trooper Urban did not name the suspect, who he said was shot and killed by police about three hours after the troopers were shot along State Route 171 in rural Susquehanna County.
Gov. Josh Shapiro of Pennsylvania said in a post on social media on Thursday afternoon that he was en route to the hospital to see the troopers.
Mr. Shapiro said that the head of the Pennsylvania State Police, Col. Christopher Paris, was already on the scene.
“I ask all of you to join us in prayer for these brave state troopers,” Mr. Shapiro told an audience at a planned event before he departed to see the troopers.
The authorities urged drivers to avoid the area, which is several miles from Thompson Township, a small town with a population under 500.
